Book Description

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY RT BOOK REVIEWS

An ambitious beauty seeking a spot among the elite is thwarted by a most disruptive gentleman in Cecilia Grant’s witty, elegant, and exquisitely sensual novel.

Kate Westbrook has dreams far bigger than romance. Love won’t get her into London’s most consequential parties, nor prevent her sisters from being snubbed and looked down upon—all because their besotted father unadvisedly married an actress. But a noble husband for Kate would deliver a future most suited to the granddaughter of an earl. Armed with ingenuity, breathtaking beauty, and the help of an idle aunt with connections, Kate is poised to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, a familiar face—albeit a maddeningly handsome one—appears bent on upsetting her scheme.

Implored by Kate’s worried father to fend off the rogues eager to exploit his daughter’s charms, Nick Blackshear has set aside the torch he’s carried for Kate in order to do right by his friend. Anyway, she made quite clear that his feelings were not returned—though policing her won’t abate Nick’s desire. Reckless passion leads to love’s awakening, but time is running out. Kate must see for herself that the charms of high society are nothing compared to the infinite sweet pleasures demanded by the heart.

Praise for A Woman Entangled

“In the third of her Blackshear family series, Grant tackles class distinction and complex family dynamics in a wonderful sensual romance and witty tale in the style of Jane Austen . . . Grant skillfully takes a shallow, immature heroine and develops her into a likable, admirable grown woman. Grant is a smart, innovative, clever writer.”RT Book Reviews

“Wielding a deliciously sharp wit that even Jane Austen would envy, Grant delivers yet another cleverly conceived and deftly choreographed Regency historical that is both lushly sensual and thoroughly romantic. Readers who have yet to discover Grant’s impeccably written romances are in for a rare treat.”Booklist (starred review)

“An emotionally rich, sensually lush romance.”Kirkus Reviews

“Cecilia Grant is swiftly becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors, with her complex characters and thoughtful explorations of how their historical period shapes them. If you love multifaceted stories, definitely give her work a try!”—Heroes and Heartbreakers

“The writing and characterization is every bit as good as I’ve come to expect, and Ms. Grant’s economic, restrained style works beautifully to allow the depth of emotion that bubbles under the surface throughout the story to speak for itself. There is no verbiage for the sake of it; this author pays her readers the huge compliment of trusting us with her material and letting us work things out for ourselves.”—All About Romance

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Kate Westbrook has one goal and one goal only: to reclaim her rightful place in society and restore her family’s good name. In order to achieve this feat, Kate is more than willing to use her beauty, her brains, and a recently revived connection with the aristocratic side of her father’s family to land a titled husband. However, just as Kate launches her campaign to find a suitable nobleman to wed, she encounters an unexpected stumbling block in the person of barrister Nicholas Blackshear. Despite the fact that she crushed his romantic hopes three years earlier, Kate considers Nick a friend, yet for some reason, her friend Nick seems bound and determined to keep Kate from achieving her goal. Wielding a deliciously sharp wit that even Jane Austen would envy, Grant delivers yet another cleverly conceived and deftly choreographed Regency historical that is both lushly sensual and thoroughly romantic. Readers who have yet to discover Grant’s impeccably written romances are in for a rare treat. --John Charles

5.0 out of 5 stars A tour de force September 4, 2013
By Claire
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful book. Everything is wonderful about it: the writing, the story, the romance. I loved it.
One of the many reasons I am a Cecilia Grant fan is that her stories are always interesting: they are about people who live on the fringes of the society usually portrayed in regency romances, and it is a pleasure to read about people who are NOT dukes and earls, who are NOT enormously rich and entitled, but who live in the same "space" and under the same social rules.
This book is a shining example (in a good way) of why historical accuracy matters: the whole story works because the author understands (and conveys) the attitudes and constraints of society at the time. This is not 21st century attitudes and language dressed up in 19th century costumes. In this story both the Hero and the heroine are very flawed but there are good reasons for them to be this way (given society at the time) and it is fun to watch them develop and find their way towards each other. The obstacles to their HEA make total sense.
Finally, Jane Austen fans will enjoy Ms Grant's nods to that great author, not only in the obvious references to P&P and Emma but in more subtle ways throughout the story.
Ms Grant occupies a place all her own in this genre and is well worth reading. This is the third in a series and is the best by far - I think it also could stand alone very well. I can't recommend it enough.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
An exquisitely beautiful young woman and unacknowledged granddaughter of an earl - provoked by her family's poor treatment within noble society - is willing to forsake love to marry an aristocrat. Kate Westbrook sets aside romantic notions for practical purposes. Now, her goal is within sight. Unfortunately, a family friend's meddling may disrupt her plans.

A few years ago, Nick Blackshear lost his head the first time he saw Kate. She bluntly nipped his courtship in the bud. Her conceit reduced his admiration of her; yet, over the years, this multifaceted woman behaved in other compelling ways to prove she is more than a pretty face. No matter. Nick has goals of his own. They may take some time to achieve due to a family scandal. Soon enough, those goals entwine with his friendship with Kate's father and the ambitious woman herself.

A Woman Entangled seems to conclude the Blackshear Family series. The characters were all I had hoped they would be: rounded, compelling, and conflicted. Again, Cecilia Grants' gorgeous prose absorbed my interest until the lethargic plot had me putting down the book a few times.

Ms. Grant has a talent for avoiding overused plot devices. This book continues with this trend, which I appreciate. Regrettably, the romance and family drama seemed inadequate. The straightforward plot needed more momentum, more energy. It's a guarantee that Nick and Kate would have their happy ending. Their inner conflict - mostly family scandals - was sincere, but not strong enough to grip this reader. A Woman Entangled played out like the gentle music from a finely-tuned cello, but I was not expecting a lullaby.

I give Ms. Grant a great big cheer for creating a seemingly shallow heroine. Kate Westbrook was anything but superficial.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deliberate and Decidedly Right June 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
When I first read Grant's first book, "A Lady Awakened," I found it novel but somewhat standoffish - rather like that story's heroine. Yet I found myself reading it twice more in the subsequent months and enjoying, appreciating really, the careful writing.
When I read "A Gentleman Undone," I immediately loved that unique pairing of characters as well as the real sense of consequence, good and bad, to their choices.
This third installment of Blackshear romance is almost a perfect hybrid. I read it slowly - unusual for me - and thought it rather average, if amusing, for at least half the book. But then... I was crying with Kate. I sympathised with and smirked at Nick. And I found the ending well-earned and surprisingly, entirely satisfying.
Like Courtney Milan and Sherry Thomas, Grant chooses protagonists on the fringe of polite society and gets a richer angle for it. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings July 4, 2013
By CA
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Cecilia Grant's heroines are always so unique and she tackles some nontraditional situations - nontraditional for the historical romance genre - that's why I enjoy her books. I liked this one - however, I am in a quandary, as I really didn't care for the main characters in this book.

Kate was incredibly shallow and pretentious in her single-minded motivation to snare a husband with a title, believing it was her right of heritage. She is ashamed of her family - her parents having married for love rather than for advancement (her mother was an actress - horrors!), and her motivation for advancement is supposedly a selfless desire to improve the prospects of her sisters, but I still thought her methods rather heartless. I was stunned that she could be so capable of such lack of faith in her own family.

Nick is only slightly better - I wanted to like him, but because his brother married a courtesan, he callously breaks off all connection with him, afraid that his brother's marriage would tarnish his social standing and prohibit any possibility of advancing in his own career. Unfortunately, both Kate and Nick, despite Nick's long-standing attraction to her, treat each other as good friends, but as obstacles to their goals in life. This would have been tolerable if it hadn't been carried through almost to the end of the book.

Perhaps these two were made for each other. But I had difficulty feeling any concern for either of them. Kate is repeatedly described as being drop-dead gorgeous, and apparently stops men dead in their tracks with her dazzling smile - and she knows it. She prides herself in her meticulous manners and conversational prowess. We are repeatedly reminded of this.
