Editorial Reviews

Woman on Fire (Mujer Ardiente), the debut solo album of Latin jazz percussionist Mayra Casales, features an ensemble of musicians who are dear to Mayra's heart and soul, and have ignited the musical passion Mayra has felt since her early years in Havana, Cuba. Special guests include Carmen Lundy, Regina Carter, Jon Lucien and David Budway.

After completing a 9 year world tour with violinist Regina Carter, Mayra created this release, the stunning culmination of the vast spectrum of her musical experiences. Mayra is one of the most versatile and well-rounded percussionists of her generation. Born in Havana, Cuba and raised in Miami, Florida, Mayra's earlier influences began with the Afro-Cuban musical culture of her surroundings. In Miami, Mayra studied with Carlos 'Potato' Valdez. Before long she was performing with some of the biggest names in Latin and Cuban music such as Celia Cruz, Machito, Joe Cuba, and Miguelito Valdez, and in 1978, Mayra moved to NYC where she played with legends such as Ray Baretto and Dizzy Gillespie followed by her long stint with Regina Carter.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent artist steps out on her own March 19, 2007
Format:Audio CD
For years I've known Mayra Casales as the percussionist for Regina Carter's ensemble. While I thoroughly enjoyed her in that role I never suspected the depth of her talent. "Woman on Fire: Mujer Ardiente" makes it clear that it's well and truly time for her to step into her own spotlight.

On this recording Casales shows off her skill and her range. Not only as a percussionist, but also as a fine singer (so fine, in fact, that she stands well with guest singer Carmen Lundy). The collection of songs on this CD are a variety of Latin-jazz pieces with the exception of a pair of beautiful ballads sung by Casales, most notably her solo voice-and-piano arrangement of "For All We Know" which closes out the CD. On the Latin numbers you really get to hear and feel Casales' Cuban roots come to the forefront as she demonstrates tricky interplay and changes as on the charanga-charged "Is It Love" (co-composed by Casales and Lundy). Mellower selections are no less enjoyable, like "Pipo" (featuring Regina Carter on violin) which feels like a cool Mojito on a warm Caribbean beach.

Fans of Cuban music and Latin-jazz now have a new artist to keep their eyes on. pick this CD up and look forward to more releases from the talented Mayra Casales.

3.0 out of 5 stars Conga Player October 20, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great music, didn't care much for her singing. Excellent Conga player, I saw her playing with Jon Lucien, 4 or 5 great songs. This CD got a lot of air play here on a Jazz station, that's where I first heard a couple of the tunes from the CD, I had to go out and buy it. Looking forward to her next CD.
