For Marian and Julian Dunne, their home at England's Dartmoor, Four Shields, has always been a haven of peace and tranquility. But unexpectedly their calm, ordered existence comes under threat. One sunny day, inside the house, Marian is overcome by dense, choking smoke. When she recovers consciousness, the smoke has disappeared and there is no trace of a fire that could have caused it. On the high ground behind the house, Julian too undergoes his own mysterious ordeal by flame. His hand is badly burned while he sleeps, and yet there is no sign of fire on the ground beside him.
A friend believes he has the key to the mystery and sets out one stormy night for a primitive settlement on a bleak Dartmoor tor where, centuries before, stood ancient druids offered blood sacrifices to their gods...
The fire and smoke return to Four Shields but only Marion can see them now. In the thick, black fumes which descend on her, threatening to choke the life from her, she can see a pair of yellow eyes, watching and waiting for some unknowable horror to descend and shatter their lives forever.
Deborah Grabien has written a powerful debut novel of mystery, suspense, and ancient evil. The book's terrifying final scene is a tour de force.
