3.0 out of 5 stars good but something's lacking
The women's group in our parish has been using this book for the past several months. There is much that is good in it and it is solidly Catholic. But I don't think it "hits the mark" for the majority of faithful Catholic women today, that is those who do not fit the model of Mrs. Martin. The main point of disparity is that most Catholic women do not have faithful...

4.0 out of 5 stars Grow in Grace, April 18, 2002

This review is from: Woman of Grace: A Bible Study for Married Women (Paperback)
I would recommend this practical and enlightening Bible study for any Catholic mother who wants to grow in grace. It was nice to finally discover a Bible study written specifically for Catholic women; I have completed two fine Christian Bible studies, but neither addressed issues of faith in the fullness that Mrs. Martin's does. The author points readers toward relevant, inspiring scripture and Catechim passages (oh, yes...you should have a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church available for reference) and encourages us to strive ever higher in our own lives as wives and mothers. Mrs. Martin's personal reflections are engaging, and she weaves them nicely throughout the nine lessons. By the end of the study, I felt as if I had gained a friend and mentor. As we all know, a little while spent in scripture study each day does wonders for the soul, and I completed the study a little bit at a time (while the little angel was napping!). This study is a wonderful tool for helping us grow in faith and grace.

Why only 4 stars? Mothers who do not have the freedom to stay home with their children may feel uncomfortable with this Bible study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks, Michaelann!, September 26, 2002

Our MOM's (Mary Our Mentor) group at our parish is using this Bible Study and have grown in number and in grace. We're only on chapter five, but are so enthusiastic about it, I can't say enough good things. We do a chapter a month and share our thoughts and feelings about the reflections and questions. We have become better women, better friends, better mother and better wives because of this Bible Study. I highly recommend it.

The women's group in our parish has been using this book for the past several months. There is much that is good in it and it is solidly Catholic. But I don't think it "hits the mark" for the majority of faithful Catholic women today, that is those who do not fit the model of Mrs. Martin. The main point of disparity is that most Catholic women do not have faithful Catholic husbands, like Mrs. Martin does, who function as the spiritual heads of the households. So much in this book is founded on the premise that they do.

She makes a point in one chapter about how astounded someone was to hear all five of her children had the same father. I wondered at that point about the women reading the book who haven't come from such a wonderful past as she, who have made serious mistakes, whose children do not all have the same father, yet still want to be "women of grace". There was nothing in the book about coming out of an imperfect past (and haven't we all really?), finding forgiveness and striving to become the women of grace God wants us to be.

I also found the format difficult to deal with. Maybe I'm just not the "write in the answers" type of person, but I really did not like so many questions with simple, one-word answers. The book is not really a Bible study, but a Bible-referenced topical presentation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and very useful!, December 8, 2004
This review is from: Woman of Grace: A Bible Study for Married Women (Paperback)
While looking for a Women's Bible Study, I came across this at an online Catholic book store. Beautifully written and very helpful for the Catholic wife. Martin keeps things pratical for married women. Our vocation is so important that we as women should do as much as we can to impove our lives and the lives of our family. Be sure to have the Catechism ready for reference! I loved the questions at the end of each chapter for reflection and the appendix is handy!

3.0 out of 5 stars don't buy the Kindle version, March 14, 2010

I bought this for the Kindle thinking it would be the same. It is not a good fit for the Kindle. First of all, it is a workbook, so now you need to have a place to write the answers in. The second problem is that it was not formatted correctly in the Kindle version. Sentences are interrupted by titles. Foot notes are on the wrong page. And good luck trying to find the appendixes! I had to search by the word appendix as there is no table of contents. Overall, I think this is a great book and has a lot of good points. I just would recommend the print version, not the electronic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Married Women, August 17, 2008
This review is from: Woman of Grace: A Bible Study for Married Women (Paperback)
I started off trying to read her book about virtue but couldn't get into it and switched to this one. Must easier to read although I did not understand some of the questions. It did open my eyes to some things I was missing and even though I am middle aged and have been married for over 30 years I really got some good out of it. My only complaint was all the flipping back and forth looking up bible verses. Those need to be in better order and not the same verses over and over. I also skipped over the section about raising kids since it was too late for me.

I would say this is a great book for young married women.
