Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Blum's intriguing book unveils a mystery of traditional Chinese medicine--the uses of the so-called forbidden pregnancy points. Weaving together personal anecdote, historical reflection, theory, and praxis, Blum describes how she first learned of the 24 forbidden points while training to be an acupuncturist. No one could tell her anything about the points except that they should be avoided during pregnancy. Blum asked the obvious question, What effect might there be on a woman during the first weeks of pregnancy if, unaware of her condition, she was unable to inform a therapist to avoid them? Using herself as prime guinea pig, Blum experimentally ascertained the healing uses of the points, which are indeed powerful enough to disrupt pregnancy but hold as powerful a potential for healing both emotional and physical traumas. An excellent addition for collections where interest in alternative medicine is high. Patricia Monaghan --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars A system that works, with some additional research, February 24, 2005
By
This review is from: Woman Heal Thyself (Paperback)
I found this book to be a mixture of practical, helpful information for laywomen to get acupuncture health benefits, and useless spiritual hokum. Clearly, the author has done some in depth personal research into her techniques, and I have benefited greatly from it. I only gave the book three stars, in part because there is a lot of nonsense in the book. There were several too many "miraculous" cure stories in the book for my taste, and far too much amorphous spirituality. Acupuncture works without all of that. Once you wade through that, the book is very helpful. However, the second reason that I only gave the book three stars, is the extremely poor quality of the graphics. If you have little experience with acupuncture, you MUST GET ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ACUPUNCTURE POINTS USED IN THIS BOOK. The drawings provided to help you locate the points are terrible, offering absolutely no landmarks to find the correct point. If you go by the graphics in this book alone, good luck finding the right point. I recommend reading this book, then visiting this website: http://yinyanghouse.discuss-acupuncture.com/acupoints/
which has wonderful, accurate graphics of the various points described in the book. With this additional information, you will be able to make this system work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look no further for answers to your women's health issues, August 29, 2001
This review is from: Woman Heal Thyself (Paperback)
This is the book if you're seeking solutions to problems with conditions, diseases and syndromes of the gynecological organs. Jeanne is compassionate and very good at explaining what goes on, where it came from and how to fix it. She is open and honest, using her personal experiences to teach us how to heal ourselves. All of this is done without drugs or surgery. My husband is a practitioner of Oriental medicine. Through him, I've had an opportunity to study accupressure and the energy meridians. Jeanne's book is by far the best I've ever come across at getting this important information out to the Western public. Read it and start your way on the path of health.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works!!!!, October 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Woman Heal Thyself (Paperback)
I was skeptical at first having tried several "alternative" healing techniques. But at 37, after years of a period that you could set a clock by, my periods became totally irregular. Bleeding before, during (excessively), and after. The doctors wanted to put me on hormones. I had a very negative experience with these in the past. Anyway, I tried this and within three months my periods were just fine. Little cramping, average to light flow. I stopped doing them several times and the irregularity came back. So now my copy is falling apart because I take it with me always. Although I don't agree with her pressure points as a birth control method or with some of her philosophies, the pressure points work!
