Book Description

May 18, 2006
Do you dream of making a difference for God--but wonder how to begin? Do you find it difficult to keep your focus amid the urgency of everyday living? Do you feel ill-equipped to help those who turn to you for guidance? Are you searching for direction for your life--a ministry that matters? Pam Farrel has been there, as have so many countless other women she has discipled. In this book she shares what she has learned about disciplemaking, discovering a personal ministry, and staying focused on your goals. By the time you work your way to the end, you'll have discovered why a woman of influence:
  • is impassioned
  • is an individual
  • is intimate with God
  • is idealistic
  • is interdependent
  • takes initiative
  • has integrity
  • is intense
  • is inquiring
  • is infectious
Though many still debate the proper role for women in leadership, no one denies that women have a great influence on their families and friends, on the job and in the church. In Woman of Influence Farrel shows how you can be a faithful servant of God in all of those relationships and circumstances. Here's a book that women everywhere will welcome--full of encouraging counsel for finding God's leading in your life and then following him. This revised edition--containing even more stories of women, updated examples and a Bible study--can give you fresh perspective and direction in your life as you discover all the ways God wants to use you to influence others for him.

Women don't need to be spiritual super-stars to be used in ministry. But they do need to keep on growing so they can keep on reaching out. Pam's book helps women see the call to mentor other women as part of the spiritual maturity process. She does this by discussing how to develop ten character traits, all starting with "I": impassioned, individual, intimate, idealistic, interdependent, initiative, integrity, intense, inquiring, and infectious. Stories from great women of the past, those living today, and women whose lives have intersected with Pam's, all help readers see how God can develop those traits in their own lives. Mid-way through her book, Pam detours to describe what she calls "Project Esther." This is a challenge to women to remember the example of Queen Esther, the unlikely vessel God chose to do the impossible (to save the Jews from Persian annihilation). Pam's earlier involvement with Campus Crusade is reflected in her admonition to identify a unique skill (Esther's was a royal dinner party) as a means to share one's faith. For example, one woman turned a gingerbread house party into an evangelistic opportunity. Each chapter ends with an application section called "Living It Out." The book also has a personal devotional guide and a small-group discussion guide. Pam's conversational style makes you feel like you're being personally mentored by her. Her content is solid and will stir you to greater spiritual impact if truly studied and applied.

3.0 out of 5 stars Woman of Influence presents 10 characteristics that are foundational to making an impact on others., January 2, 2008

This review is from: Woman of Influence: Ten Traits of Those Who Want to Make a Difference (Paperback)
In a day and age when many leaders' lives don't match their exhortations the emphasis of this book is sorely needed. Certainly, if we are people of integrity, have inquiring minds and live infectious lives (just to mention 3 of the 10 traits the author covers), we are bound to influence others. So, Pam Farrel's message is clear that any woman can be a person of infuence.

My disappointment came from the expectation that she would state specific actions that I can take to be a more influential person. Since the book seemed to be designed more to be a general exhortation to touch the lives of those around you, it fell short of my hopes and thus gets 3 stars.

If you are looking for a basic book on character development, then Woman of Influence should benefit you. However, if you want to really learn specific steps to transform the behavior of others, may I suggest Influencer by Patterson, Grenny and others.
