I found a remaindered video copy of
NOTRE DAME OF PARIS for 30 cents Euro in a Parisian video store this April. For those of you unfamiliar with it, the musical is the most faithful adaptaion of Victor Hugo's novel, and in my opinion, is one of the greatest stage productions ever. All the lead vocalists, Garou (Quasimodo), Brunno Pelletier (Gringoire), Luck Mervil (Clopin), Patrick Fiori (Phoebus), and Daniel Lavoie (Frollo) are exceptional, all with unique styles. Their other musical accomplishments are well worth seeking out.
Daniel Lavoie's performance in Notre Dame captured the soul of the tragic priest so well I found myself despising him! That, however, is only a testament to Mr. Lavoie's amazing ability to totally inhabit a character. On Woman To Man, he not only contributed some of the most achingly beautiful, world weary vocals since Frank Sinatra, he composed the music, wrote lyrics and even played piano on some tunes. The result is the exact opposite of the mad love the Notre Dame priest had for Esmeralda. These tunes and their performances go right to the heart of the positive, life-affirming, and potentially healing nature of love. They also deal with losing love with dignity, and feeling helpless from lonliness. In addition, the song LEADERS is the best anti-war song since Blowin' In The Wind, concise and to the point!
This CD is highly addictive listening and has my highest recommendation, but Mr. Lavoie's Montreal fans should be forewarned if they don't already know that all the lyrics are in English.

Each song is a gem backed by musicians of the genius style, they use a slight hint of distortion among other methods not found in average pop music ,the songs tell a story that brings you there as the feeling you in some way have felt before,i wish it would rain is a song about being stuck in a place and the sadness of not able to change it,paris calling in the night is a homesick type song with deep feelings, they all have the ability to take you along with the mood, you will never forget it and you will play it over and over,Daniel has numerous french albums and his voice is unforgetable, this album should be a classic ,I am most sincere,Bill
