RPJ INVADES Your Stereo System!,

This review is from: Woman Out of Control (Audio CD)
Between Ray's solo debut a year earlier with Other Woman and his huge pop success in 1984 with Ghostbusters there was this album. When he began his solo career he was still basically following the same kind of moog bass-based pop-funk sound of his old group Raydio, even if it had a few rock n roll and quiet storm twists. By this point electro funk,as well as Prince's then hugely popular Minneapolis sound was having the same effect on Ray as it was everyone else. The result is a fine collection of songs that utilize the sound of analog electronics and drum machines along with Ray's guitar and horns. The title track as well as "Electronic Lover" put both drum machines and synths to effect to create a series of rhythms that......for all the gadgetry gets the effect of being extremely funky."I Still Can't Get Over Loving You" burns in another way,a bass synth pulse at more of a moderate tempo and was the most popular song from this album. The two most "organic" songs on here,as in sounding the most like Ray's older material would have to be "I Don't Wanna Know" and "She Still Feels The Need",both midtempo quiet stormy tunes, though still very modern and electronic in a lighter way and the latter tune has a very significant theme about the imposed shame put upon mature women who still desire love in their lives. There is a recurrent lyrical theme thoroughout this album regarding the insensativity between men and women in an age where technology and selfishness seemed to be weighing out over human emotion. It was a semi recurrent theme in some early 80's funk and R&B but one of Ray Parker's talents as a writer was to write lyrics that adults could relate to but were plain spoken enough to make sense to high schoolers;his lyrics had a strong cross generational appeal even when he became somewhat more explicit. The 7+ minute electro/vocorderjam "Invasion" puts this lyrical concept into the theme of an alien invasion,a great mix of humor and light social commentary complete with faux police reports, computerized voices, the works."In The Heat Of The Night",a breezy, contemporary breakup song is one of the albums mellower moments while it closes with my favoirte tune "N2U2",an instrumental that completely reinvents Ray's musical formula for songs of this kind;he emphasizes his guitar over moog bass,in fact not even including it anywhere on this album at all.Even though Ray plays all the instruments on this it really does have the effect of a full band. That if you ask me is one of the best trait a multi-instrumentalist can have. Having been out of print on CD for years this album is one of the most varied and artistically challanging of Ray's extensive recording career and no matter how long it remains in print it's a more then worthwhile effort for Ray Parker fans or lovers of 80's naked funk.

This review is from: Woman Out of Control (Audio CD)
At 1st. I hated this cd. Back in 1984 it was a cassette tape. Anyway My 2nd son was only 1 lbs & 10 Oz. when he was born. He was in the Womans Hospital in downtown Chicago. We live 50 miles norhwest so lots of trips back and forth. The radio in the car did not work but the tape player did. My wife owned 2 tapes this one and another by Kim Carnes called Voyeur. (Also purchased from Amozon) And at 1st I hated that one too. But after 3 round trips to and from Chicago I started to like them. Tapes got worn out. Was able to replace tapes about 8 years. But again tapes got worn out. Was able to replace both tapes this time around with CDs and the quality is awesome. Funny how I started off not liking these Cds to end up replacing them twice.A little high in price. But worth every penny to me.
