Beautiful cd by a gifted artist, July 5, 2011
There are so many hugely succesful artists in the UK who never achieved the same fame here in the States. Sometimes it truly is confusing as with Linda Lewis. She is a multi faceted performer with a 5 octave range and great emotive ability capable of singing a huge variety of genres. Some may compare her to the equally talented Deniece Williams and Minnie Ripperton. This cd WOMAN OVERBOARD from 1977 was her second on Arista and a huge smash in the UK. And from beginning to end this set showcases a huge talent displaying her huge versatility. There are so many highlights. We have smooth soul with YOU CAME and DREAMER OF DREAMS. Then she has great fun with the deep groove of COME BACK AND FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED and the jazzy MY LOVE IS HERE TO STAY. NO. 1 HEARTBREAKER is a lush soul ballad and she really slows it down for simple, angelic heartfelt readings on the acoustic MOON AND I and the lovely MY FRIEND THE SUN.
This woman possesses a voice meant to be heard. Luckily BBR has made this album a part of their rereleases of 70s classics. They have done their expected magic and presented it here beautifully remastered with extensive liner notes and 3 bonus tracks. Often bonus tracks are mediocre songs added on. Not the case here. The 3 bonus tracks are some of the highlights on this release, especially CAN'T WE JUST SIT DOWN AND TALK IT OVER. If you know Linda Lewis then this cd is a no question but if you don't know her and love pure r&b, soul and jazz this cd is for you. This is a truly gifted artist and this cd shows her in all her glory. Highly recommended.
