5.0 out of 5 stars I never buy soundtracks, but this is just too good...
This is the first soundtrack I've ever purchased and I can't stop listening to it! The music has a relaxing beat with guitar and vocals that have a deep, buttery feel. 3.0 out of 5 stars Really great background music and super salsa
I listen to this frequently while at work. It's peppy enough to keep me going and yet not so intrusive as to distract. Super music to play at a cocktail party.

This is the first soundtrack I've ever purchased and I can't stop listening to it! The music has a relaxing beat with guitar and vocals that have a deep, buttery feel. There isn't a bad track on this disk, though I'm partial to "A Flor E O Espinho" and the haunting and alluring female voice of Maria Creusa as she sings "Obsessao". I also enjoyed the playful beat and vocals of "Falsa Baiana." It has introduced an entirely new category of music to me; I've even begun looking for CDs by the artists appearing on this soundtrack.

I enjoyed the movie, though I don't speak a word of Portugese, and I had a craving for two things when I left the theatre: spicy seafood dishes and this soundtrack!

4.0 out of 5 stars ON TOP OF GREAT MUSIC, September 17, 2000

I recently attended a screening of this film in Chicago, and the music was by far the most effective and enjoyable part of the experience. The Brazilian rythyms and general cheerful, soulful and sensual feel of the music heightened the drama and comedy of the film considerably. If you're a fan of film music in general, you definitley must add this to your collection; if you're not, this is the kind of music you'd play on a romantic or relaxing evening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreaming of Brazil!, September 19, 2000
This review is from: Woman on Top - Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
Fully realized while watching the movie, Woman on Top, how much music means to the enjoyment of a film. The pleasant sounds from this film, which are also essential elements of the plot will be long remembered by this viewer. And now that I have purchased the CD, I can't stop listening to it nor dancing to the wonderful songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could this open the floodgates of Bossa Nova?, March 28, 2001

I sure hope so. Not being too familiar with the Bossa Nova style I can't offer much in the way of musical critique. All I can say is that I rushed out to buy this CD less than an hour after seeing the movie. "Woman On Top" was a virtual vacation for someone like myself who spends way too much time in front of a computer and not enough time seeing the world. Listening to these beautiful and romantic Brazilian songs is energizing for the mind and restores the soul. I am reminded of what Robin Williams said in "Dead Poets' Society" in which he praises 'medicine and law' as noble pursuits but 'poetry, music, and love' as being what we live for. "Woman On Top", both the movie and the CD, captures exactly that mood and frame of mind. I just hope that the popularity of this CD will help bring more of the Bossa Nova style music to an American audience that definitely needs to lighten up, relax, and enjoy life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music!, October 18, 2000

I recently went to see this movie shortly after it opened, and despite the fact that the movie is by no means stellar (pleasantly sweet and rather cliche), what really struck me was the music. I purchased the soundtrack on the way home; that's how great it is. The collection of music contained on this CD is so good, I include it in the only three CDs that I love to listen to repeatedly, and have yet to tire of (see Facing Future by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole by Play by Moby). I rarely find CDs worth a 5-star recommendation.

So two things kept popping up in my head while watching the movie: (1) I'm hungry and (2) I have to buy this soundtrack. After satiating my hunger, I bought the WOMAN ON TOP soundtrack. It's now found a permanent spot in my CD player--it's certainly great dinner party music. The album houses wonderful Brazillian-influenced tracks--Track 6 is one my favorite tracks. Let your hips move and let your mind dream of white sand and blue water and papayas! One of the best soundtracks I've listened to.

4.0 out of 5 stars this is the road to becoming a true brazilian music fan, March 27, 2002

I knew I would be buying this soundtrack half way through the movie. I've been a latin music fan for many years and this CD rates at or near the top of my collection, not as a serious and critical work, but as a nice listen on a warm afternoon or early evening with a glass of red wine. If you are not already a fan, or even familiar with, Brazilian music, this will whet your whistle. The clean, clear charactersitics of the Bossa Nova genre are present here, and the artists on the CD are some of the best-in-class. This CD is a nice light start to becoming a hard-core Bossa Nova fan. The tracks are generally catchy and full of air. If you're looking for a wonderful new musical experience, try this out. Worth a listen and worth the buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brazilian experience, June 16, 2001
This review is from: Woman on Top - Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I have no idea of Brazil's culture moreso with its music but after I saw Woman on Top the movie, I have just got to have the soundtrack! I have never bought an album that features songs that I know I might never be able to understand but the melody, rythm, and voices of the performers here are so exquisite that I don't care if I don't get to understand what their singing about. I love all songs for it relaxes me. How the singers here were able to give the Brazilian experience is beyond words. I truly love this and hope that others would be able to feel the same experience as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passion Music, September 25, 2000

I just came back from seeing the movie, and as all things brazilian & latin it's very sensual, the actors, the colors, the food... Ah! but the music, you could almost close your eyes and it's rhytm & cadence specially reminded me of the sea and the passion that is part of our lives in Latin America!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Soundtrack, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Woman on Top - Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This is the soundtrack to "Woman On Top", a movie featuring Penelope Cruz and Murilo Benicio. It's really a testament to Brazilian music; Bossa Nova, Samba and some original themes. The extremely talented Moska (Paulinho Moska) among a slew of other talented Brazilian artists and musician, from Lenine to Dori Caymmi.

This is a very romantic album and, as indicated by the very first song "A Flor E O Espinho" (Flower or Thorn). It's a slower, yet a bit of a sad song, but the album picks up with Moska's rendition of "Falsa Baiana" - a nice take too. Lenine's "O Ultimo Por Do Sol" follows appropriately, with terrific guitar and his amazingly rich voice. Wonderful song, 'walking alone'... terrific. Maria Creusa's heartfelt "Obsessao" is also a classic. Other songs on this that I enjoyed were Dori Caymmi's and Baden Powell's tracks and Cyl Farney/Norma Bengell did a great job with "Voce". Meanwhile Xavier Cugat's "Brazil" is and always will be timeless, a mid-late 50's track. BossaCucaNova remixed Moska's "Falsa Baiana" here and it was pretty much their sound of 2000 or so, when they had Brasilidade on the horizon.

I think this soundtrack was very well put together and the musicianship was exceptional. I won't rag on the movie... we thought it was light and fun. Murilo Benicio was hilarious. Me and my girl have jokes about the IMO cheesy "Nos Bracos De Isabel" and the way he sang it, walking about with an entourage of musicians. If you like this soundtrack, then you will probably love the soundtrack to "Next Stop Wonderland", which features work by Claudio Ragazzi, Vinicius Cantuaria and Bebel Gilberto among others. And you may like some of Paulinho Moska's work, Marcos Valle's tunes on the Far Out label (or the Brazilan Love Affair series) and of course, some of the classic Bossa Nova from Getz/Gilberto, Dori Caymmi, Joyce & Tutti Moreno, Baden Powell and Sergio Mendes older works.
