5.0 out of 5 stars Best Victorian Mystery November 17, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
"The Woman in White" is the best Victorian mystery I have ever read. The plot twists and turns keeping the reader guessing. The characters, costumes and customs of the time are vividly described in detail. I wish there was a hardback edition as this novel will be a part of my permanent library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Woman in White March 17, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of the best novels I have read in a long time. Packed with intrigue from the first pages with characters to match. A Gothic manor, a young artist sent to that dark, forboding house to mentor two young ladies in art, teaching them drawing. Meanwhile,in the same house, is the brooding, frail old man who is the charge of these two young women.

And then also introduced in the very first pages is the strange, obviously troubled young woman all dressed in white whom the young artist meets on a rural road on a dark night.

This is a page turner to the end, though does bog down a bit in the middle with perhaps too much detail. I loved the fact that the author was educated as a lawyer, though never practiced, for there is enough legalese thrown into to plot to make it even more fascinating. The author was a friend and colleague of Charles Dickens and in my book as good a writer as the more famous Dickens.

No wonder Victorian England was captured by this story which was serialized by a magazine that Dickens owned. Those stuffy English of that period (including the Royals)awaited with bated breath for the next installment. Be sure to read the history behind the book that is included in the front of the book. My rating: all thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wilkiw Collins will never disappoint October 2, 2011
By Sonia
Format:Paperback
A mystery of the first degree. Many plots would fall apart in this day and age with forensics as they stand. But for the time it was written, it was a marvel of suspense. A good read. I loved it. Sad when it was done.

Reminded me of things I sloshed through in high school. It had some interesting moments but I never doubted how it would end. It was 200 pages tooooo long.

What a great story. I can't believe I heard about it totally by accident, and I am an avid reader. Written in 1860, it has never been out of print! Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start, dumb ending
I really enjoyed the premise of the book. It is a good read until about three-quarters of the way through. Then it becomes tedious and a little far-fetched.
