Book Description

November 6, 1991

More than a million readers have followed Lynn Andrews on her journeys into the sacred mysteries of the Sisterhood of the Shields -- and this may be the most startling episode yet. Guided by Agnes Whistling Elk into a world of power and magic, Lynn Andrews enters the sacred Dreamtime and emerges as a young woman, Catherine, in medieval England. There she encounters Grandmother, the Woman of Wyrrd, who becomes her teacher -- a woman who offers to take Andrews's ordinary life and build it into a remarkable one full of power, goodness, adventure, and love. In this dazzling spritual adventure, Andrews tells the fascinating story of Catherine's introduction into the secrets of the Sisterhood, her initiation into its rituals and cermonies, her confrontation with death when she dishonors that tradititon, and her terrifying attemp to recover the soul she loses to a dark brooding man who enters her life. In The Woman of Wyrrd, Lynn Andrews reveals the many secrets she has learned about working with the energies of Mother Earth, restoring feminine power and potential, and ultimately tapping into a life without fear.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This glacially paced account of the author's regression to a previous medieval lifetime in which she learns ancient mysteries follows Medicine Woman and other reports of Andrews's past lives. Guided by two Indian shaman women, Agnes Whistling Elk and Ruby Plenty Chiefs, the narrator takes up, in "Dreamtime," the life of a young English noblewoman, Catherine, as she is taught by a crone she calls Grandmother about the women of the Wyrrd, who long predate Western culture and worship the "firstness of women." Catherine/Andrews learns mental skills such as healing, movement out of the body and communication with animals. She also meets a young nobleman who refuses her love to retain his position in his current lifetime, leaving the narrator to find her own salvation. Reading like historical romance, this will be snapped up by Andrews's large following.

From Library Journal

In her seventh book relating her shamanic training, Andrews dives deeper into the teachings of the Sisterhood of the Shields. Guided by Agnes Whistling Elk, Andrews enters the Sacred Dreamtime to explore her past life as a young girl, Catherine, in medieval England. There she is taught by a wise old woman. Catherine falls in love, and when the love affair does not go well, she loses her soul. She must go on a spiritual journey to retrieve her soul and her strength. As always, Andrews provides a good, strong story that balances the dramatic with the spiritual. Moreover, Andrews relates a great deal of philosophical thought without excessive commentary. The strength of the teaching forces the reader to greater awareness. Recommended for public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, October 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Woman of Wyrrd: The Arousal of the Inner Fire (Paperback)
Andrews has been critcized for her approach to 20th century spiritualism, but this book shows that her fiction has an edge rarely found in contemporary writing. This addition to her chronicles takes the author on a dreamtime journey to Celtic England where Catherine (Andrews in a previous life) begins her studies with a wise woman and the Women of Wyrrd, those ancient crones who hold all the truths of all time. Celtic lore especially fascinates me and the journeys and experiences of Catherine serve to reinforce that we all share the same roots, regardless of the lables we assume today. I read these books for the spiritual truths between the lines and found this book to have more than it's share. A delight to read and to experience.

I really enjoyed this book...I have read Lynn Andrews book out of sequence because several friends and I are sharing them...that hasn't changed her story for me at all. The fact that she is such a wonderful storyteller makes that possible for you to do! I love her...
