Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A run-down of some of this book's contributors-which include Marianne Williamson, Oriah Mountain Dreamer, Hildegard of Bingen, Ammachi, and anonymous Celtic and Native American authors-suggests that its intended audience is women interested in New Age and feminist spirituality. It certainly succeeds in providing well-sifted, prayerful reading for its target market. The book's greatest strength is the pride of place it gives to poetry, eschewing sappy, written-for-the-moment prayers in favor of reflective poems from many different times and spiritual traditions. Rita Dove and Denise Levertov get their due; Anne Lamott offers a poem of gratitude; and Madeleine L'Engle contributes a lovely three-line invocation. This feast of women's poetry would make a marvelous gift from one woman to another, or-perhaps more importantly-for a woman to give herself.

More About the Author

I am Anita Mathias, and I live and write in an old stone farmhouse in Oxford, England, with my husband Roy; my daughters, Zoe and Irene, Jake the Collie and Merry the Labradoodle. We are surrounded by a massive old rambling garden and orchard, and we have dream of growing our own fruit and vegetables, and practising permaculture! Wish us luck!
My most recent book is Francesco, Artist of Florence: The Man Who Gave Too Much. My first book was Wandering Between Two Worlds, which is my life in essays. Chapters from Wandering Between Two Worlds have won a National Endowment for the Arts Award and a Minnesota State Arts Board award. They have been published at The Washington Post, The London Magazine, Commonweal, America, The Christian Century, and The Best Spiritual Writing anthologies. I am working on a memoir, Mind has Mountains.
I first arrived in Oxford to read English at Somerville College, Oxford University, where I earned my B.A. and M.A. moved on to America to do a Masters in Creative Writing at Ohio State University, spent an entirely accidental 17 years there, and then returned to England ten years ago. I feel rooted here in Oxford.
Dreaming Beneath the Spires is a personal spiritual blog. I explore what it means to follow Christ as a wife, mum, and writer in affluent and beautiful 21st century Oxford.
I am slowly blogging through the Bible, a post every week or so.
My big themes include the love of God, the magic of prayer, the power of gratitude, the wisdom of the Bible, and the joy of reading and writing!
But I write about other things too. Travel, always travel! Gardening. The books I read. My attempts to be a superlative good enough housekeeper, and to get lean and mean strong and healthy!
Here is a spiritual autobiography: http://anitamathias.com/2013/06/25/i-am-from-the-sweet-sour-salty-bitter-body-of-christ/

This is a stunning collection of moving, inspired poetry, prose, and prayers. The editor's words are also touching. I have given this book to at least fifteen women in my life (and one man). I love it; love to pick it up for a quick burst of inspiration. Very sweet!
