Great Book - Great Help,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Woman's Addiction Workbook: Your Guide to In-Depth Healing (Paperback)
My therapist first introduced this book to me, and I am so grateful!! It isn't just reading material, it has step-by-step instructions and exercises to follow. This book won't take the place of a therapist or counselor, but it can definitely be a BIG help when used at home. If you are serious about getting past your addiction(s), you should look into buying this book. It has truly, truly helped me!

Without this book, I would still be using drugs. This is one of the few books I've read that allowed me to really look at issues of gender in recovery. I did all of the exercises, and each one brought new insights and knowledge. Every once in a while I go back to them. Thank you, Dr. Najavits!

I'm a recovery coach and after I push Sober for Good: New Solutions for Drinking Problems -- Advice from Those Who Have Succeeded by Anne Fletcher (very gently) on a new client, I suggest that he or she buy this workbook. Yes, men have found it useful too! Perhaps Dr. Najavits' work with people with post-traumatic stress disorder has given her this exquisite sensitivity. The exercises she suggests are well-planned and grounded in the reality of women in recovery. It is ultimately a kind book. Her harm reduction approach also fits with the experience that I and others working in the field of addiction recognize: You meet the person in need of help where she is right now, not where you think she should be!

This is an incredible book--from the first page, I felt like I had found a kind, smart, loving friend who was there to help me with my problem. Whatever you need to know to help understand your addiction and begin to work through it, this book offers it. It has exercises, stories, facts, and lots of comfort and encouragement. What I like best is that it doesn't preach--you can skip around, read whatever you need at the time...I didn't feel like I was being judged. Thank you....

I was introduced to Dr. Najavits' work at a San Francisco CBHS seminar. Being quite taken with her approach to addictions--especially in women, I bought her first book "Seeking Safety" to use with my clients. No longer in private practice and living on the East coast, I now work in a substance abuse program and recently brought "A Woman's Addiction Workbook." The worksheets I have used with clients struggling with addiction have been helpful and seem to facilitate introspection. While the book is written specifically for women, the ideas can be reworded/reworked to help men. Very professional, well-written, and relevant book.

A compassionate approach,

I think this is one of the best approaches I've seen for women with substance abuse problems. I've been there, and know that a lot of traditional treatment doesn't work for women. I especially liked the focus on emotional disorders, the gentle style, and the background about how women's addiction is different from men's.

A WOMAN'S ADDICTION WORKBOOK has helped me,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Woman's Addiction Workbook: Your Guide to In-Depth Healing (Paperback)
A WOMAN'S ADDICTION WORKBOOK has helped me tremendously. Dr. Najavits has authority in her writing, and I don't mean just that she knows her stuff. I also mean that I trust that she says what she means and that things will improve in my life, that I will learn something every time I really read and use her workbook. Her guidance comes across, same as it does in SEEKING SAFETY, although I haven't read all of that. I have read workbooks similar to this book, and they haven't given me the reassurance that I can learn to live differently and see myself differently through reading. I don't feel talked down to--or wafted over in some granola, touchy-feely way that I have when reading another book that I won't mention by name--yes, I feel proud of myself for reading this book.
