More About the Author

Writing made me sit down and shut up and, as a result, helped me become aware of the desire to move from an over-busy lifestyle to a more balanced one. I actually didn't begin writing until all four kids were either in college or on their own. In fact, I was forty-five when the Muse grabbed me by the back of the neck and wouldn't let go no matter how much I resisted. And resist I did! However, my first book, The Courage To Be Yourself, seemed to have a mind of its own and simply would not let me rest until I was totally committed to it. By the time the original book was completed, I was passionate about writing. Since I'd had a private psychotherapy practice for many years, it felt natural to write about issues similar to those with which my clients and I grappled.

I am incredibly blessed to be able to do work I love and to have the support of My Husband Gene, without whom I would never have become an author. We--well, really he--self-published "The Courage To Be Yourself", stacked the first 5,000 copies in our itty bitty garage, and hand delivered two and three copies at a time to local bookstores before the book was eventually picked up by a "real" publisher. To this day, Gene continues to do all the heavy lifting, paper and financial work, schlepping of author to speaking engagements, and has enduring patience with the weirdness-of-wife-while-writing phases I inevitably go through while working. He is my rock.... and he makes me laugh.

Each of us plays many roles and works in different arenas during a lifetime. Below are a few roles I've played and some of the work I've done. Several I still do and others seem as if they existed in another time and space.

ROLES I'VE HAD
Wife, divorcee, wife again ... still "wife again"
Mom, single mom, stepmom ... once a mom of any kind, always a mom
Grandmother, mentor ... love these roles
Myriad acting roles in community theater ... now do some Reader's Theater

WORK I'VE DONE
Author
Psychotherapist in private practice
Public/Keynote Speaker
Seminar/Group/Retreat Leader
Hospice Chaplain, Trainer &
Counselor
Director of a Counseling Center
High School and Adult Ed teacher

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will help you grow!, August 27, 1999
By A Customer
I stumbled on this book in the bookstore, along with "The Woman's Book of Confidence," and bought both books. I keep them in my bottom desk drawer at work and read passages from time to time during the day. These books are so uplifting - they keep me motivated and secure - I feel like I can handle whatever happens. Buy both books - you will be glad you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed how this book helps women to see below the surface, July 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Woman's Book of Courage: Meditations for Empowerment and Peace of Mind (Paperback)
This book was very instrumental in helping a women to see how she can manage her life in a more productive manner. Instead of always blaming others for life's problems, the author shows how a woman can step back from the situation and change the way she perceives the problem. Sometimes we cause our own problems or it might be something we grew up with that needs to be examined objectively. This book also helped me to see where some of the stresses in my life were coming from and how to cope better with them. Instead of being victims, the author showed how we can change this vicious circle and learn how to like ourselves again. I would definitely recommend this book to all women, especially those who are low in self-esteem. I think you may have to read this book in a quiet place with no distractions so you can really meditate on the material and try the ideas out in your own life. You may have to do this gradually if those around you are not used to an assertive wom! ! an! Not that you will become overbearing, but sometimes people, especially men, feel threatened when a woman stands up for herself and speaks her mind for a change! We do have to start with ourselves, though, if we want to make changes in our lives for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, March 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Woman's Book of Courage: Meditations for Empowerment and Peace of Mind (Paperback)
I purchased this book shortly before what I knew would be to-date the most difficult time in my life. Through following the readings and meditations I feel that I was able to endure the difficult time with the courage and empowerment that the author offers. Years later and I still very much appreciate this book.
