Book Description

September 1, 1996
"Judy was one of my idols growing up in golf--she was the leading player of her day on the tour. She's broken important ground for women with her TV work for ABC. And she does it again with A Woman's Guide to Better Golf." -- Nancy Lopez, 47-time winner on the LPGA Tour "Judy was the most consistent ball-striker of any pro player I've ever seen. She knows everything there is about this multifaceted game, and in this book she shares that wealth of knowledge with golfers of all abilities." -- JoAnne CarrIer, LPGA Tour Hall of Fame In A Woman's Guide to Better Golf, Judy Rankin offers a combination of mechanical advice, gleaned from her many years of competitive golf, and practical suggestions specifically targeted to today's woman golfer. Rankin, one of the pioneers of the "strong" grip popular on the tour today, uses that grip as a building block for overcoming the number-one problem woman golfers face: lack of power and distance. She covers the hard-core instruction basics on setup, full-swing mechanics, the short game, putting, sand play, strategy, and trouble shots in text and photographs. She also offers practical tips on taking lessons, buying equipment, and arranging games to keep matches interesting. And she shares her unique observations about the top players-both men and women-in the game today. In addition to offering no-nonsense, time-tested advice, Rankin has enlisted a little help from some of her friends: LPGA stars such as Beth Daniel, Nancy Lopez, Helen Alfredsson, and Dottie Pepper as well as players on the men's and senior tours have all provided valuable insights anq tips for woman golfers. Judy Rankin joined the LPGA Tour in 1962 at age 17 and went on to gamer 27 victories during her playing career. She was named LPGA Player of the Year in 1976 and in 1977, and she was chosen captain of the 1996 LPGA Tour Solheim Cup. Rankin, who covers both men's and women's golf events for ABC Sports, lives in Midland, Texas. Peter McCleery, a senior editor at Golf Digest, specializes in covering television and the major golf tournaments and organizations.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This how-to guide is distinguished by the large number of photographs and line drawings that illustrate the instructor's lessons, with a minimum of nice but not very informative photographs that are often in books of this ilk. Rankin, whose professional golfing heyday was in the 1960s and 1970s, currently works as an on-course TV commentator for both men's and women's tournaments and has made several instructional videos. She covers swing basics, course strategy, warmup exercises, lesson-taking, and provides two unique features: a chapter on how to give golf a one-month tryout before giving up (as so many beginners do) and how to learn from watching golf on TV. Relatively jargon-free, this book includes many tips from many professionals, both male and female. A good complement to Nancy Lopez's The Complete Golfer (LJ 10/15/87) and Kathy Whitworth's Golf for Women (LJ 6/15/90).?Kathy Ruffle, Coll. of New Caledonia Lib., Prince George, B.C.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book for Beginners., February 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Woman's Guide to Better Golf (Paperback)
While nothing will replace a series of lessons from a competent teaching pro, this book can be a useful supplement for those of us who need to have something tangible to refer back to, in between lessons and rounds. The pictures are detailed and are particularly nice with regard to giving the reader a sequential view of different shots from different angles. Some of the theory behind different shots is also presented, but not in an overly wordy or technical manner. As a novice woman golfer, I refer to this book fairly frequently, as it has given me a better understanding of my particular swing mechanics without inundating me with a lot of physics. I found the discourse on grip particularly helpful. There are also some nice side-bar comments and tips sprinkled throughout the book, which can be useful. I found this book to be well-written, without cute language and/or negative attitudes about male golfers. Thanks, Judy.
