4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Investment Basics, just a little outdated, February 21, 2011

This review is from: A Woman's Guide to Savvy Investing: Everything You Need to Know to Protect Your Future (Paperback)
Maybe it's just me, but I've had some trouble finding an investment book I like.

I am a grown woman and don't need to hear about checking accounts and credit cards. How exactly do these "money gurus" think I've been living my life so far?? I'm also not interested in "how to be a millionaire by 45 and never work another day" schemes or inspirational stories of people who have made it. I wanted exactly what Marsha Bertrand delivers in this book: an overview of investment tools, an education on how to evaluate stocks, mutual funds and bonds, and a great step by step process to help me choose a financial planner and/or stockbroker based on my needs. She does this clearly, in a well organized book that translates Wall Street jargon into words and concepts I can understand.

Granted, the version I have of this book was published in 97... Some considerations are outdated - wondering how the Dow Jones index will do in 2000 or recommending that one calls the SEC for information are very "20th century". :)

Still, all the lessons are valid today. Evaluating companies' annual reports and looking for specific numbers, ratios and trends never goes out of style. I also really appreciated both her tone and her quotes. Women are perfectly capable of handling financial matters on their own and have a duty to be informed and in charge.

If this book was re-edited in 2011, I would buy the new edition for myself and another dozen to give to my friends. If not, I'll gladly keep my ear marked copy around as other financial books lose relevance after just a few weeks...
