Amazon.com Review

The Internet is "like a truck-stop honky-tonk in a country-western song: littered with good intentions, broken promises, and unfulfilled dreams," write Anne Semans and Cathy Winks, coauthors of The Woman's Guide to Sex on the Web. The duo clearly spent long hours separating the wheat from the chaff to come up with roughly 200 stellar Web sex sites. Their forthright, diverting Net surfers' handbook seems to offer something for everyone of any sexual persuasion. So, what's your pleasure? Like your sex out of this world--with aliens and vampires, that is? Click on Dreams Unlimited. Looking for softcore? Check out Danni's Hard Drive. BDSM? Lesbian? Postpartum mom? Postfeminist? Just curious? No matter what your bent, there's plenty to pique your interest and loads of canny consumer tips, too. A chapter on steamy bulletin boards, chat rooms, conferences, and dating sites tells readers how to mind their manners and warns them to keep their heads about them. Before you shell out a dime on the numerous sex-for-pay sites, Semans and Winks suggest a look at the "Hall of Shame" posted on Jane's Net Sex Guide, an opinionated escort through the highs and lows of cybersex. The coauthors don't pull punches, either. While they tout the "exquisite images" on one art-erotica site, they complain quite sharply about the "pedestrian" and "annoying" text that accompanies it. Interviews with various Webmistresses and reviews of zines and sites for sex toys, books, and other resources also pepper these pages. --Francesca Coltrera

Review

"Thoroughly excellent job on culling what's out there in Internet land. Semans and Winks can always be counted upon to present the full picture." -- Isadora Alman, professional sexologist and syndicated advice columnist

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of web sites dealing with sexuality., March 5, 1999

"The Woman's Guide to Sex on the Web" is a wonderful guidebook for those seeking sexual information and enhancement of their sex lives through the web. Well-researched, clear, and very readable, the book dismisses the sleazy pay-first come-ons that appeal only to men whose brains are encircled by their coronal ridge. My only complaint is its exclusionary title. This book is not just for women; it is for all people who see sex as a coming together of equals for mutual pleasure and celebration. In the often tawdry environment of web sex, this reasonable book is a breath of fresh air.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's about time!, February 10, 1999

Finally, a publisher wise enough to realize that women ARE TOO interested in sex! And they found the perfect authors, with an appealing, down-to-earth writing style I can relate to.

This book covers everything - consumer issues, dating and cyber relationships, and of course the one most people can't bring themselves to believe women are interested in: erotica/porn.

I think this is a great gift for men to buy if they surf the "adult" side of the 'net alone and want to start including their partner. (though they may be pleasantly surprised that their partner is also surfing steamy stuff).

Bought on a dare. Definitely out of date, but I guess it was up-to-date at its writing. Mostly mild stuff, so don't think you'll be getting porn sites. Those are easy enough to find, if you have an email account with a weak filter.
