My mother had this cookbook, and no matter how misogynistic the title, this book is incredible. The knowledge contained herein is that which allowed our parents and grandparents to create those older recipes. And surprisingly, it's not all fatty. This cookbook went out of print in the 50s when the Women's Home Companion magazine went under, and it's a shame no one has purchased the rights to rerelease it. It's a treasure. (My personal favorite is the pumpkin pie recipe. Also, the instructions for making pie crust are great.)

Thirty some years ago, my Mother-in-Law shared her copy of this book with me. I loved the recipe's in it! Several of them have become family traditions over the years. I was able to find a copy of my own through a used book store search in the mid 1970's (pre-computer:0)
Just a few weeks ago, I was able to locate another copy for my adult daughter. Now she can carry on our family traditions of wonderful comfort food recipies from this great cook book. I like to collect cook books but in all honesty, I don't get around to using most of them. The 'Woman's Home Companion Cook Book' is the exception. It is the first book I pull off the shelf when I want to try a 'new' delicious recipe for my family. Try the turkey sausage stuffing recipe for Thanksgiving. You will understand what I mean. Can't count the times I have been asked for a copy of that recipe! All in all, one of the best cookbooks in my library...if not the BEST!

The paragraph on making pastry such as pie shells, etc., is worth the price of this book. Without a doubt, the best explanation of why you do this and why you do that together with the options of using various fats and the results that may be obtained with each. This is the book your mother or grandmother grew up with, having been first published during WWII. It is a book that belongs in the kitchen of any person who loves or lives to cook.

In my family this was the cookbook used for 90% of the meals. Fad cookbooks came and went, but this one book was always there. If you can find a copy buy it. It is a treasure to enjoy!

My Mom used her copy (1946) constantly when I was growing up and it was the first "grown-up" cook book I used when I began my culinary adventures. We used to tease Mom that she read it like other people read novels but boy did we eat well ... and healthy! Sadly her copy was lost to time but I got myself the 1945 edition. Regardless of the edition, the book is a great reference and a must-have for serious cooks, worthy to share the shelf with Beard, Child and Farmer. Extremely comprehensive, it covers fundamentals on "everything eating" from how to set a table for different occasions, how to carve, Food Measurements/Equivalents, a Glossary of Cooking Terms, etc., as well as easy to understand descriptions/explanations of different cooking techniques. It also gives a lot of information about the foods in the various sections and their preparation and tons of recipes with lots of variations-on-theme to give you plenty of ideas to inspire your own creative efforts. The vintage pictures are fun, too! If you enjoy cooking (and reading), not to mention eating, treat yourself to a copy! The Woman's Home Companion Cook Book makes a great gift for cooks-in-training (regardless of the gender!) Every kitchen should have one!

I have the 1944 version of this cookbook and it's wonderful. I love that it addresses wartime rationing in a short forward; I'm not sure the 1946 version would have that. This amazing book is pretty much all you need to learn to cook. It has full meat cooking tables, how to can and preserve, all types of measurements, you name it. I refer to it often when cooking meats and poultry. This year I plan to teach myself to can with the recipes and methods in the back of this book.

It's also a wonderful source for retro recipes - some of which are kinda scary! This cookbook also has the full complement of retro cocktails, too, which is FASCINATING.

If you are a beginner or someone who is accomplished (like me), I say buy this book in any printing that you can find it. It is an ESSENTIAL kitchen tome!

This was the only cookbook my mother had (or needed) for the first 20 years of her marriage.So many of the recipes are family favorites that my sisters and I spent years trying to obtain a copy of this cookbook for all 8 of us. (We have our mother's 1946 edition, but it's falling apart from years of hard use.)We learned to bake with the "Take-It-Easy" cake recipes, and the Date Nut Bars are still our family's favorite Christmas cookie. The Rich Refrigerator Cookies dough makes the best Raisin Filled Cookies I have ever eaten. While I have quite a collection of cookbooks, this is the one I treasure and still refer to frequently.

There was an old Cookbook on a high shelf in the kitchen. I was told that when my grandmother got married & left home not long after the start of World War 2, my Great Grandmother gave her this book. It was then passed down to my mother.
I remember my mother taking it down, to leaf through its already worn & stained pages when cooking dinner or baking desserts. When I was old enough to start learning to cook, it was from those pages that my first tries at cooking and baking took their direction.

I had been looking for a copy of this old out of print cookbook for my own use for years. I finally tracked one down in good condition, when my dad called & asked me if there were any good book repair places near me, because my mother's favorite cookbook's spine had fallen apart & she was afraid to use it for fear of further damage to a family heirloom. So I bought that copy & sent it to my Mother instead.

Since then I have seen copies for sale here & there but always overpriced or badly damaged. When I finally found another copy at a reasonable price in good condition, I grabbed it up as quickly as could. I could not be happier, simply flipping through the pages of this clearly well loved copy bring back so many memories, I can't wait to start breaking out some of my favorites, Just need to start working on replacing the highlights & footnotes left by the last 3 generations of my family so I have a proper replacement.
