I wish this book had been available when I was entering the business world over 25 years ago! Diane Dutton has written an honest and enlightening book about her journey to success. Any young woman just starting her career needs to read this book. Those of us who have been in the work place for a while will gain fresh insight and perhaps consider new goals. 5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking Glass Ceilings, February 18, 2007
This review is from: A Woman's Ladder to Success Is Paved with Broken Glass Ceilings (Paperback)
This book should be in every female executive's briefcase. Using the fable structure, the author introduces us to Jesse Stevens, the fable's guide. Through Jesse, the author gives us shrewd insights into the world of the female executive and how she can break glass ceilings in business. In reality, the author has analyzed her own experiences with glass ceilings, and they translate very well to the page. Touching on everything from how to conduct yourself with colleagues (male and female), motivations, management values and strategies, wardrobe, to when to move on, Diane Dutton has written a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great career resource, January 9, 2009
This review is from: A Woman's Ladder to Success Is Paved with Broken Glass Ceilings (Paperback)
Dutton's book is empowering. It provides an infusion of ideas for anyone's personal or business strategy. While the title will mainly attract women, I believe it is an excellent resource for men to gain a clearer perspective on what it takes for women to break the proverbial "glass ceiling." It is a quick read and definitely a book I will reference in the future. Thanks Diane for writing a gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional woman's hammer...., February 27, 2007
This review is from: A Woman's Ladder to Success Is Paved with Broken Glass Ceilings (Paperback)
Reviewed by Vicki Landes for Reader Views (2/07)

Has your career been stuck in the same spot for too long? Bumping your head on a glass ceiling? Diane Dutton's new release can serve as your metaphorical hammer. "A Woman's Ladder to Success is Paved with Broken Glass Ceilings" not only has a smashing title (pun intended), it's full of great advice and leaves the reader with a new found sense of motivation and options she probably hadn't considered before.

Instead of giving straight out advice, Dutton organizes her book in a fun, educational story. Her guidance is weaved into the fictional life and career path of Jesse, which makes this book not only easy to read but easy to absorb and emulate. The book begins with Jesse at the zenith of her career. As she contemplates her success, she begins to look back on how she shattered a number of different obstacles, including disparities of the sexes, double standards, the `Old Boys Club', the hilariously-named-but-seriously-detrimental `Sacred Cow' and many more. After Dutton takes us through Jesse's career, she offers a quiz for readers to assess their own career's current state of affairs. Each multiple choice answer is explained at the conclusion of the quiz with advice on how to get past their present issues. Finally, she explains what she considers to be the eight most important business fallacies and how to overcome each as well as recommended reading for further research.

Dutton does a commendable job of educating and empowering women to see their career goals through to a successful conclusion - all without attacking the opposite sex, as one might expect given the subject matter. She, through her character Jesse, maintains a healthy respect for her male counterparts while taking a strong stand for her values and ethics. Instead of emotional lash-outs at these glass ceiling barriers, Dutton emphasizes the situational facts and their presentation - these are the career woman's tools.

"A Woman's Ladder to Success" is written for the professional woman, whether at the beginning stages of her career or at a point where she needs some extra help in getting further along. Women at the entry-level will find it a wonderful resource in understanding and possibly precluding a number of potential road blocks. The seasoned professional can utilize this book to alter those tactics that have been unsuccessful so far. In either case, if you know how to jump, the hurdle in front of you is easier to overcome.

"A Woman's Ladder to Success is Paved with Broken Ceilings" is the professional woman's hammer! Diane Dutton motivates her readers past the bloody shards and up to the level in their careers where they deserve to be - all without compromising their character, ethics, or values. Don't go to work without it!
