This review is from: Women of the African Ark: Photographs by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher: A Book of Postcards (Paperback)
This collection of 30 striking photographs made for a highly appreciable presentation in postcards. Depicting younger women and girls of the eastern coast of Africa--the Horn of Africa--the collection showcases a representative variety of customs and aesthetics. The bulk of the samples are from Ethiopia and Eritrea, but also include Kenyan and Somali women, as well as single photographs of girls from Harar and Djibouti. As is standard, the cards provide brief details on each subject on the correspondence side, and have rich color and sharp detail.Among my favorites: SOMALI WOMAN, Brava, Somalia (includes a bit on the bui bui) HAMAR WOMEN, Ethiopia (includes info. on ceremony, attire, courtship dance) SURMA GIRL, Ethiopia (cover photo) AFAR WOMAN, Rift Valley, Ethiopia (includes a bit on Kwosso) TURKANA GIRL, Kenya (striking photo of Lower Omo River valley girl carrying a large fish atop her head) HAMAR COUPLE, Ethiopia (photo of charming couple, with husband styling wife's hair, each holding ends of raffia) OGADEN MARKET, Ethiopia (gorgeous photo of woman going to market, wearing lovely headwrap) I look forward to sharing these with loved ones via mail correspondence. |
