Book Description

May 2005
Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) history has been virtually overlooked for 59 years. While several books have been published about these heroines, the scope of these works are limited primarily to memoirs, which fail to present a holistic view of the WASP program, the role of women during World War II, and their contributions to our nation's defense and heritage. Here, at last, is a comprehensive book that examines WASP history. This fascinating true-life story of American women in action during World War II is presented in a chronological narrative, interlaced with an abundance of pertinent photographs and class rosters, all combined in a single, easily referenced volume. This book will educate, motivate, and inspire readers with the extraordinary lives and achievements of the first women in history to fly American military aircraft. Meet Jacqueline Cochran, a world-renowned pilot, who approached Eleanor Roosevelt with an idea to employ female pilots in var! ious types of support operations, such as flying transports, couriers, and ambulances, thus freeing up the men to serve as combat pilots. Meet Nancy Harkness Love, Cornelia Fort, and other selfless patriots. These "sisters of the sky" loved their country, and despite oppressive restrictions and innuendo of their frailties, they blazed new trails for the women of America.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Womens' History!!!, April 15, 2011

This review is from: Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II: The WASP (Paperback)
I love this book. It is a thoroughly fascinating read of truly remarkable women that I never knew of before. These lady pilots flew aircraft in harm's way throughout WW II but the US Government refused to acknowledge their military service until recently. The book is jam packed with photos, charts, and facts that support the chronological story of their exploits. Highly recommended!!!

This review is from: Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II: The WASP (Paperback)
The best thing about this book is its subject matter the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots). It's a little-known, but fascinating page out of World War II history that should easily make a compelling read for anyone. Unfortunately this book misses that mark. To begin with, it reads as if bits and pieces of source material were copied and pasted together in an effort to create a coherent narrative. On top of that, the text is rife with grammatical, spelling and typographic errors making it a tedious and frustrating read. Every author needs good literary and copy editors to complete a work, and there is no evidence of either ever having laid eyes on this book. The blame for that rests squarely on the publisher's shoulders, not the writer's. This book should never had gone to print in it's current form, suggesting to me that it was released either by a vanity press, or a publisher with absolutely no concern for quality.

Basically, a good first draft that should have gone through a number of editing cycles before being released.
