Re-examining an extensive range of source material including wills, charters, letters, chronicles, archaeological discoveries, place-names and poetry, Christine Fell resolves this contradiction locating the distortion and prejudice within past scholarship. Two concluding chapters examine the impact of the Norman Conquest which triggered a dramatic shift in this pattern of equality that extended beyond the social, economic and political position of women, and tainted the records of written history.

Women in Anglo Saxon England by Christine Fell - and the impact of 1066 Cecily Clark and Elizabeth Williams.The Introduction clearly sets out the authors' hypothesis hat captures the reader's attention. The body of the work is well constructed and supported with references. The indexing and Bibliography is an invaluable source for readers interested in the status of women before and following the Norman Conquest of England, as well as in the women of 21st Century. The authors' research on the subject is extensive and sources cited. They have not simply relied on written sources, contemporary and later but have carefully researched evidence from the contemporary archaeological record to further explain why and how they reached their conclusions. The style of writing is clear, providing detail and evidence in a concise and well constructed language. This book makes good reading for non-historian readers as well as for the academic historian.
