Book Description

Women on Women June 1, 1996
A generation of literary luminaries presents its best work - from the traditional to the transgressive - in this adventurous, engaging new collection. Joan Nestle and Naomi Holoch, the editors of the acclaimed "Women on Women" series, have assembled a third volume of America's best lesbian short fiction - with superb results.

Thirty-two passionate voices sing out from the page, telling their stories in tones ranging from the sweet cadences of Clover Cannady's "blueberry" to the blunt realism of Leslie Feinberg's "One Day at the Mace Factory." An erotic charge runs through the volume, tracing a pattern of desire, from the irresistibly cocky Cat Reeves in Lu Vickers's "Crystal Ball, " through Lexa Rosean's powerful religious rebellion in "A Kosher Megila, " and the vibrant heroines of Lydia Swartz's audacious "What We Do in Bed." Brilliant stylists like Rebecca Brown, Michelle Cliff, Sapphire, Jenifer Levin, and Ann Imbrie present moving narratives of love and loss that complete the collection's emotional and literary range.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Veteran editors Holoch and Nestle's third compilation of fiction by established and emerging writers boldly challenges any notion of lesbian writing as a homogeneous genre. Unlike its predecessor in the series, Women on Women 3 spans only three decades of lesbian fiction. Excerpts from Elana Nachman's Riverfinger Women and Kate Millet's Sita, both published in the 1970s, and Barbara Smith's 1983 story "Home" illuminate the similarities?and radical departures?of current lesbian fiction. The pieces cover a number of different themes: aside from love and relationships, the subjects include gender and butch/femme identity in socioeconomic and historical contexts; the subtleties of intergenerational friendship and trust; family ties and homophobia. Some of the best pieces are those by Sheila Ortiz Taylor, Frankie Hucklenbroich and Lu Vicker, all of which brilliantly capture the fleeting magic of childhood memories. The didactic "An American in Chiapas" by Nisa Donelly and the drawn out coming-of-age tale, "Leap of Faith," by Hillary Mullins are among the few weak selections found in an otherwise strong collection. But if the collection itself is various, the series is not: it's a little disappointing to see so many names repeated from Women on Women 2 (Michelle Cliff, Gerry Pearlberg, Ellen Frye, Lexa Rosean, Lucy Jane Bledsoe, Rebecca Brown). It's not that they're not good writers. They are, but varying (or at least rotating) writers would serve the series better.

From Booklist

Like its predecessors, the third Women on Women features work from throughout the short history of lesbian fiction. The oldest entries are two 1970s novel excerpts. Most of the others are quite recent--indeed, they sport 1995 copyrights. Contributors include a few known beyond the lesbian audience (Kate Millet, Minnie Bruce Pratt), many lesbian press stalwarts, and several relative newcomers. Ray Olson

This review is from: Women on Women 3: A New Anthology of American Lesbian Fiction (No. 3) (Paperback)
Before i read this book .. i felt lost and curious at the same time . I knew that I had feelings for women , just as i had taught myself to "act" like i felt for men . I came across " Women on Women 3" on a road trip to Maine with some friends of mine . I was only 17 . So , i stayed up one night, the same day i bought the book , and read all night . Each story spoke to me , and i had come to this grand realisation that i was in fact a lesbian. It was as though a little light in my head was turned on ! I carried the book to my chest with me everywhere . I couldn't have been more happy . When i came home though , it was a different story . I had left my book lying on the stair case. My mother; with her air of revernt grace that seems to follow her about , took one look at the book , and thew it away . I never saw my book again , and living in the small town that i do , it is close to impossible to find any lesbian literature . So i wrote this.. I feel that now i can not mourn the loss of it .. but now i can be blessed with the knowlege that someone who is searching for their 'indenity' can read this , and know that there is one great book out there too look to ..
