Editorial Reviews

Review

Of course you've heard of Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Degas, but what about Artemisia Gentileschi, Judith Leyden and Berthe Morisot? If you left college art history classes wondering why women are so often the subject of Western art but so rarely its creators, this book will prove fascinating. In her comprehensive, readable and richly illustrated text, Whitney Chadwick examines not only the works of little-known but extremely gifted women artists, but the strategies by which women have been excluded from the traditional canon of "great artists." She points out numerous instances in which a woman's works have been attributed to her less talented father, lover or simply another, more famous male contemporary. Most importantly, Women, Art and Society illuminates a wonderful world of art which can speak for all of us-from a woman's perspective. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Naomi Yavneh

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be required Art History text book, August 11, 2001
By
Teri Ford (Madison, WI United States) - See all my reviews
The information in this book should be in every Art History 101 text book, but unfortunately it isn't! It does read like a good text book and there are lots of illustrations (although there could be lots more). Chadwick is in expert in her field. Anyone interested in Art History should know what this book covers...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Study, March 17, 2010
This was a brilliant Study that highlights the achievement of often neglected female artists. Chadwick's approach does not only look at the artist themselves, but she delves into their specific works to unveil the mask of what has been viewed with a gender bias eye. It takes a look at art dating back from the middle ages, up until now. Definitely a phenomenal piece and very well written.

If you enjoyed this as much as I have, I would recommend checking out, Who Does She Think She Is? Its a documentary about 5 women who struggle to balance time between artistic expression and practical living in a world where most people cannot name 1 single female artist.
