Book Description

May 2000
Until relatively recently, the primitive practice of gathering in circles-perhaps the oldest and most powerful form for creating community, teaching and healing-was lost to modern cultures. With the dawning of the new millennium, people are experiencing an overwhelming yearning for change and renewal. In this environment of awareness, circle groups are becoming a powerful force as social, spiritual and political outlets for women. We are finally coming home to circles and coming home to ourselves.

Women Circling the Earth explains the history and importance of the circle movement and details the benefits of women's circles for: providing a much-needed sense of community; helping people reconnect with the sacred; manifesting healing; achieving consensus; and creating social change. The book also profiles some existing women's circles; shows how circle groups can benefit women in even more traditional or conservative situations; and provides readers with guidelines for creating a women's circle of their own.

This profound and practical book will show women that they can-and must-lead the way in making the changes that will save humanity and Mother Earth, and that this change will happen one circle at a time.

What People Are Saying About Women Circling the Earth

"Of the constellation of literature on this subject, Beverly's contribution is a bright shining star. It speaks to the reasons why many women are seeking to circle now. With practical wisdom and spiritual guidance, she illuminates for all of us ways to circle together and, equally important, to link with other circles so that women together can encircle their lives and this Earth with their love."
-Carol Proudfoot-Edgar, poet, shamanic path walker, tender of Sacred Circles

"Women Circling The Earth speaks from the heart to the heart. This book illuminates the spirit of the circle in a way that brings it within the reach of any who wish to move their lives in that direction. It is a rich source of information, resources and inspiration for both women and men. In this book I felt loving intent and an honoring of the many sources of wisdom about circle."
-Kay Pranis, restorative justice planner, Minnesota Department of Corrections

"I love this book. It spurred me to action in both my personal and professional life. Beverly did a remarkable job of reminding us who do this work that circle is the way to transformation. I tend to forget this when I am right in the middle of it. It takes a book like this to put it all together."
-Ellie Mercer, ordained clergywoman, United Church of Christ

"An idea often sprouts in widely separate places. Then someone comes along and sees the pattern. In Women Circling the Earth Beverly Engel brings great synthesis and clarity to the sacred practice of circles."
-Cindy Spring, coauthor, Wisdom Circles

This review is from: Women Circling the Earth: A Guide to Fostering Healing, Community and Empowerment (Paperback)
I found this book easy to read and understand. The "circle" concept was new to me and I liked the author's explanation of the history and origin of circles. I appreciated the honest, down to earth language and concrete examples. I also liked the interviews of other women who have contributed to the author's research of the subject.

Beverly Engle communicates honestly and shared her personal journey with women's circles. I am using the concepts in my daily life.
