Great Read on a Forgotten Aspect of US Civil War History - Females on the Battlefront, July 8, 2011
This review is from: Women on the Civil War Battlefront (Modern War Studies) (Hardcover)
I picked this book up last semester ater reading a copied section handed out to my Civil War Era studies class at Gettysburg College. Within those 10 pages, I found Hall's writing to be not only intriguing, factual and informative, but well-written in a manner that keeps the reader's interest.
Even if the American Civil War is not your forte, this book speaks volumes in an unbiased manner in terms of the female contribution to the war concerning roles that, in antebellum society, had been filled solely by males. I highly recommend this book because it honors the lives of various well documented and unknown ladies alike, who: who entered the ranks, worked as nurses and doctors & stepped out of the 'cult of domesticity.'
There is also an extensive set of appendices that reference from which CW era newspapers the author drew his information. This book is worth the price, even if this is not your interest - the tales related here are adventure stories concerning a war-torn era of our nation's history!
