Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Introduced by thoughtful essays on feminist aesthetics and attitudes toward musicology, this welcome book covers 25 composers from the 12th through the 20th centuries (nine of whom are not found in the Historical Anthology of Music by Women , LJ 2/15/87). Each chapter gives an outline of important dates in the composer's life, a short commentary on her works in general, specific notes on a piece or two that can be heard on a separately available cassette tape (from Leonarda Productions), and a works list, discography, and short bibliography. Useful appendixes list sources for recordings, additional 20th-century women composers, and music appreciation textbooks that do and do not include women. A chart of Western music history that mentions more women composers than are included in the book gives a fuller picture of their number. A good, accessible guide for a teacher or self-directed student.

Review

Diane Peacock Jezic, a pianist, teacher, musicologist, mother and feminist, died in 1989, leaving behind this book as a legacy of her dedication to women composers and their music. Beginning with Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) of the Medieval Period and finishing with six present-day composers, such as Ellen Zwilich, Women Composers provides a historical recounting of each composer, with a biographical summary, a musical example and a selected list of works. This is a long overdue resource for music scholars, aficionados and others who want to establish women's place in musical history. Elizabeth Wood, who took on the project of producing this second edition, adds even more on the accomplishments of women in music spanning over 900 years. Discover the prolific herstory of each woman while listening to the book's companion cassettes featuring the works of all 25 composers. An engaging combination. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by SH

1.0 out of 5 stars now superceded by other books, July 17, 2008
This review is from: Women Composers: The Lost Tradition Found 2nd Edition (The Diane Peacock Jezic Series of Women in Music) (Paperback)
A pioneering book in its day, Jezic's work is now superceded by other research. Its many errors and inaccuracies leave it with little to recommend.
