This review is from: Women At The Crossroads (Paperback)
Renaud effectively accomplishes her goal as it is expressed in the preface, to "tell the story of the women behind the code names and statistics" (p.xi). Women at the Crossroads will leave the reader more culturally informed about the lives and circumstances of Senegalese women who choose to work as prostitutes, and the daily endeavors they encounter to protect themselves from HIV/STDs. Renaud's combination of participant-observation and in-depth interviews produce engaging personal narratives that create a valuable book. This is an ideal ethnography for new ethnographers to explore the basic principles of field research in action and to introduce the complexity of working with sensitive populations. I highly praise and recommend Women at the Crossroads to all anthropologists, clinical infectious disease researchers, and laymen interested in the `culture of prostitution' in Senegal.
