Book Description

May 1, 1999
Annie Smith Peck attempted seven times to climb Peru's highest mountain; Delia Akeley hunted big game in Africa; Marguerite Harrison spied in Russia for America; Louise Arner Boyd led expeditions to perilous East Greenland. Precursors of the modern Jane Goodalls and Sally Rides, these women represent a fascinating but forgotten era in the literature of exploration.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Although now almost completely forgotten, the four subjects of this collective biography were celebrated heroines in the first four decades of the 20th century. Annie Peck climbed mountains in South America; Delia Akeley explored equatorial Africa and lived with isolated pygmy tribes; Marguerite Harrison was a spy in Soviet Russia and a filmmaker trekking with nomads in Persia; Louise Boyd led expeditions to the Arctic. Olds, a journalist and past president of the Society of Women Geographers, has written a crisp, lively, and wonderfully entertaining account of these early members of the society. In addition , she has performed the valuable task of restoring the memory of these women to contemporary history. One hopes that these brief sketches will inspire book-length biographies. 5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational look back at 4 remarkable women, June 19, 2000
By
This review is from: Women of the Four Winds: The Adventures of Four of America's first women explorers (Paperback)
This inspirational biography chronicles the remarkable tales of 4 early women adventurers. Compared to today's adventure classic, Into Thin Air, this book reflects back to a time when early explorers made the trek to the top of Peru's tallest peak in leather lace up boots and a skirt. reading like and adventure novel, and exceptionally well written. This is an inspirational read for both sexes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Stories of Women Adventurers, July 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a terrific, inspiring book about adventurous, stubborn, innovative women of another time, who refused to bend to social constraints and instead create lives of their own making. I think that many women - of all ages - will find it fascinating and a source of strength and motivation.

I bought this book specifically for information on one of the women covered - Annie Smith Peck. I was the owner of her brother William's Victorian home in Providence - where she frequently stayed - for 20 years. When I bought the house from its 4th owner (William was the 1st, his son the 2nd), an 83-yr-old widow who had loved there for 40+ years, she pointed out an antique oak mission desk in the living room, and told me that it had been Miss Peck's and that it was on this desk that she had done much of her writing of her adventures. I still have this desk, and treasure it. I have spent many hours writing there. I'd swear that it is still imbued with some of Annie's creative and adventurous spirit.
