Book Description

April 24, 2009
This book offers information about nutrition, gradual fitness programs, and encouragement to women who want to become fit, or remain fit, after 50. Stewart-Roache, 70, a counselor, has participated in Senior Olympics and sprint triathlons. Yarnell, 62, is a Homeopathic counselor who walks, runs and does strength training. Women to Women is a thorough yet practical guide to assist us in living an active lifestyle at any age. Catharine and Barbara are an inspiration to all women no matter how old or young. These authors have done a fabulous job outlining the most important ingredients required for a healthy, more vibrant lifestyle. Renee Beshures, Owner/Director, BoulderBodyworks. I found this handbook for active aging to be an easy read with accurate AND understandable scientific information about diet and exercise. The advice is very practical and timely. A book to read now and reference for years to come. it is never too early or late to start taking care of yourself. Darla Bejnar, MD

Editorial Reviews

Review

A simple guide to active living aimed at women over 60. Stewart-Roache and Yarnell met on a Semester at Sea voyage and realized that they shared the same dedication to fitness, despite having different body types and being 62 and 70 years old, respectively. The two decided to create a basic fitness handbook for older women complete with information addressing frequent senior health problems such as arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and loss of vision, taste or hearing. Noting that most fitness articles aimed at older people promise to extend life or reverse aging, the authors focus on fitness as a way to improve the overall quality of one's life rather than a way to erase wrinkles or turn back the clock. Stewart-Roache and Yarnell's refreshing, no-nonsense attitude toward aging can be summed up by their brusque, introductory statement that "old can be active old or rocking chair old." The book continues in a similarly conversational tone, with the first half consisting of a quick introduction to nutrition and aerobic exercise, interspersed with notes of friendly encouragement. Much of the nutrition wisdom is somewhat typical (such as encouragement to eat antioxidants and avoid high-fructose corn syrup), but the book also includes useful information on eating to avoid diabetes and the authors' personal tips for maintaining a healthy weight. The fitness section includes information on achieving one's target heart rate and proper warm-up and cool-down procedures, followed by tips to avoid injury and advice for staying goal-oriented. The remaining half of the book consists of useful reference information including charts of vitamins and minerals, exercise plans, goal sheets, healthy recipes and examples of the fitness plans followed by other older women. The authors provide short exercise plans for running, bicycling, yoga and swimming, but encourage women to explore other, equally healthy activities, such as ping-pong, scuba diving, skiing and golf. Fitness veterans may find the book lacks sufficient research or depth, but it's a excellent start for beginners. An appealing introduction to healthy living. --Kirkus Discoveries Review, July 6,2009

Review

Women to Women is doing for me what so many fitness books have failed to do - encouraging me to get active and stay active, and helping me focus on overall well-being and health, rather than the daily ups and downs of the scale. With sections on nutrition, getting fit, exercising and goal setting, the book helps the reader determine her own style and pace of activity and path towards fitness, and shows one how to approach the aging years with energy, confidence, and enthusiasm. While keeping an eye on being sensible and safe, the book maps out a plan for developing an enjoyable, rewarding active lifestyle that is possible to stick to throughout the years. And, it's filled with tons of helpful, down-to-earth advice on how to keep being active as the years roll on. This book is an invaluable resource and is a celebration of the benefits that come from being active throughout aging. Read it, and get moving and motivated!

As a female in my mid sixties trying to maintain an appropriate level of fitness that I can actually accomplish, I found this book to be a realistic, sometimes funny, always encouraging way to work towards my goals of being as healthy as I can through my own efforts. Not all of us are those curvaceous babes with the rock hard abs but we do want to be as fit as realistically possible. This book will help you in your quest.
