Gr 9 Up--A comprehensive history of women who served in the U.S. Congress, beginning with the election of Jeanette Rankin in 1917 to the House of Representatives to the present. Many female members of Congress are profiled with an emphasis on their campaign styles and legislative interests and contributions. Special emphasis is placed on Rankin, Margaret Chase Smith, and Geraldine Ferraro. The writing shows glowing admiration for these high-ranking lawmakers. Unfortunately, the text is sometimes repetitious and there are unnecessary digressions. There are also some errors. Alice Roosevelt was not the White House hostess for her widowed father Theodore Roosevelt as he had remarried four years before he became president; and the Oval Office tapes did not show that President Richard Nixon was a driving force behind the Watergate break-in, but that he had authorized the cover-up. Numerous black-and-white photos are included as is a flow chart of how an idea becomes law. Bryna J. Fireside's Is There a Women in the House--or Senate? (Albert Whitman, 1993) lacks this book's historical sweep but is more focused and has a livelier format.
