2.0 out of 5 stars Of Women and Horses
Nice photo's and philosophy of individual horseman(women), does not provide in my view much information on "training" which is what I had hoped for.

This review is from: Of Women and Horses (Hardcover)
I've been riding on and off all my life since my grandfather put me on a horse at the tender age of three. This book explores the relationships we, as women, have with our beasties, and does so beautifully. Through the words of 22 women from all walks of life: cowgirls to princesses; barrel racers to show jumpers; we see the intricate, emotional, complex relationship that women have with their horses.

The book has an essay on horses by each of the women featured, and is illustrated with beautiful photographs, expressive watercolors, textural oils, and graceful line drawings. It's a book to be savored, read in the evening when you won't be distracted, sipped gently like a fine wine, not gulped. It's a book to come back to again and again, to re-read the essays, to empathize with the writers, and to ponder anew the comments that GaWaNi makes after each piece. It's a book which captures, in physical form, the ephemeral relationship we have with our 'mulies. It's rather surprising that a man could do so, but given this man's expertise with horses, I suppose not so much so.

If you're looking for a gorgeous book to celebrate the special bond between horses and women, this is the one to buy.

I received this book about a month ago and can't put it down. I've read it over and over again, needless to say I have lost many hours of sleep because I just can't unglue myself from it. The intense emotion and enthusiasm that these women express towards their love of horses really hit home for me. A very compelling and insightful book for anyone who has a passion for this magnificient animal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! One of a Kind!!, October 19, 2000
This review is from: Of Women and Horses (Hardcover)
I don't think an average male would be capable of collecting and organizing such amazing stories from such sensitive women. The art work, photographs and text truly convey the connection between women and horses. This book honors and validates what we women have always known. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly engaging compendium of essays by horsewoman, February 23, 2001
This review is from: Of Women and Horses (Hardcover)
"Of Women & Horses" is a thoroughly engaging compendium of essays by several horsewomen, augmented by the commentary of GaWaNi Pony Boy, the photography of Gabrielle Boiselle, and illustrations by diverse artists. The unifying themes are the relationships, insights, experience, and fascination of women with respect to the horse. From Heather E. Greaves's "A Woman's Metamorphosis with Horses" to Lisa Kiser's "The Horse in the Woman's Role" to Martha Josey's "My Love for Horses," these 22 informative, inspiring essays are very highly recommended reading for students of human/animal relationships, the psychological influence and impact of horses upon the human psyche, women's studies, and equine studies reading lists.

I found this book to be very interesting and enjoyable. Pony has done an outstanding job. The stories are heartfelt, touching and as unique as each author. The photographs and artwork are beautiful. This book is a must have for every horse lover or anyone who enjoys good reading. Perhaps more important a must read for any parent considering buying a horse for their childern.

I am not even a "horse" person, and I thought this was superb. It has a lovely, touching collection of photos, art, and the written word. It taps directly into the indescribable nature of the link between animals and their people.

I bought this book as a gift for my youngest daughter who shares the love of horses with me. The photos are gorgeous. The essays of these horse women are beautifully written, full of imagery and delve into the spirit of women's connection with these magnificent animals. I highly recommend this book to collect and cherish.

5.0 out of 5 stars A man doing a book on horse women?, May 20, 2005

This review is from: Of Women and Horses (Hardcover)
It's about time, GaWaNi has done it again. I laughed, I cried and felt deeply for many of the women in this incredible book. I first heard about it when I saw him on Larry King Live with Bo Derek, Terry Ventura and Chaia King (the latter two are actually in the book) and thought it might be an interesting read.....I have this on my coffee table and come back to it time and time again. What's nice about the format of this book is you can read one or two of the essays, and come back to it later - a very convenient read, and nice to go with whatever mood I happen to be in - (and ladies, we know we have many) you will find a story to go with every one!
I've had several friends try to make off with it - but told them to get their own! Beautiful artwork and a gorgeous layout make this pleasing to the eye, and the thoughts and words will move your heart.
I heard a rumor that he's put out another one, can't wait!
