A broad look at Lust from an expert in erotic story anthologies,
By
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
What is Lust?Lust is one of the Deadly Sins. Lust is one of the precepts that Buddhist practices abjures. Lust is an intense longing, not necessarily sexual, but often categorized as such. Lust is one of the most powerful of the emotions. Women in Lust is an anthology of erotic stories edited by Erotica anthology impresario Rachel Kramer Bussel exploring the idea, consequences, motivations and geography of lust, specifically from a woman's point of view. Lust makes people do dangerous, reckless, even trangressive things. Women in Lust is an anthology that embodies those principles in 20 stories, many of them veterans of Bussel's anthologies before. Bussel herself has a tasty story, anthologist's privilege, you bet, in "Hot for teacher". No laws are broken in this story, but it does play with that very classic trope and plays with it well. Speaking of tropes and themes, while the overarching theme of lust might not give you a clue as to what truly is in store, I discovered a variety of scenarios, kinks, motifs and interpretations of the theme. The stories range from a pretend interrogation ("The Hard Way" to a dominance and submission themed threesome ("Her, Him and Them") , There is even, much to my surprise, a knifeplay story, "Beneath my skin". What was the strongest story for me, you might ask? Besides Hot for Teacher, which pushed my buttons in all the right ways? Probably the "anchor story", Donna George Storey's "Comfort food". Yes, the story involves food, but nothing as simple or straightforward as using food in kinky ways. The thing that detracts from the anthology, and it's a strength nearly as much as a weakness, is that with such a broad theme and such a variety of participants, the anthology is extremely broad and shallow in terms of the types of stories here. Although Bussel has curated anthologies like this before, in this case it seems especially spread out. This means that while your kink is probably guaranteed to be here in some form or another, it also means that the lack of overlap in that respect of the stories in the book might make you think the book has less value than it truly does. I think the stories could have been a little tighter together. Women in Lust is a well written anthology, don't get me wrong. I don't think it is quite the best collection Bussel has put together, but I've never been disappointed in one of her anthologies, and Women in Lust is no exception.

So hot it'll burn your fingers!,
By
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
Women in Lust is an erotic anthology from the powerhouse that is Rachel Kramer Bussel, and let me tell you, it's HOT.Containing stories from writers such as Portia Da Costa, Charlotte Stein, Elizabeth Coldwell, Jacqueline Applebee, Justine Elyot, K D Grace, Shanna Germain and Donna George Storey, Women in Lust is an anthology which has a wide variety of voices, styles and scenarios - yet they all have one thing in common: super high quality. I love to read anthologies because of the variety, yet there's usually a story here and there that I don't like - or end up skipping altogether. Not so with Women in Lust. I genuinely enjoyed each and every story. Particular favourites included Naughty Thoughts by Portia Da Costa, Hot for Teacher by Rachel Kramer Bussel and Comfort Food by Donna George Storey. I love to see how authors put different twists on themes, i.e. women in lust, and think this book is a brilliant example of how it's done. The stories are well-written, varied and super hot. So if you're looking a totally sexy, so-hot-it'll-burn-your-fingers book, then you should definitely add Women in Lust to your shopping list.

Mischievous Fun,
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
Women in Lust is an anthology I really enjoyed and that I'd recommend wholeheartedly. First off, it's well-written and well-edited. It's evident that that the authors care about the craft of writing and the editor clearly took the time to select good stories and craft them into a compelling collection. Also, the stories are all written by women about women; it's not only fun but gratifying to see women take charge of their own desire and sexuality. Finally, the stories are often a little tongue-in-cheek; the authors obviously enjoyed writing them and aren't afraid to be a little mischievous and poke a little fun. One of my favorite stories in the anthology is Donna George Storey's "Comfort Food." Not only is the story, like the title, playful, but the sheer sensory detail is amazing and the characters well-developed. My favorite line is "my desire made me more interesting to myself." In a way, this line captures the spirit of the whole anthology, which is ultimately about how desire enriches women's lives and gives us permission to live as authentically as possible. Other stories I especially liked are "Smoke"--for its dauntless, irreverent heroine-- and "Unbidden"--for the way it challenged my expectations of the ending. Really, though, the whole collection is great. Definitely buy it!

Wham... Bam... thank you Rachel!,

This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
I think I'm going to write a short story collection and make Rachel my vixen in every single story. Hell, I might end up making her into a twin or triplets! Everything about Rachel exudes sexuality and I always, always, always, enjoy reading her collections. `Women in Lust' is another stunning erotic collection. And when I say stunning I mean STUNNING! I usually re-read the erotic collections I buy about two to three times over the history of the book, but this one was the first time I re-read a collection back to back. I do NOT recommend this because the state of arousal this will put you will make horny it's very own state. Even the stories that had the S&M that I'm not into had me going.I love how descriptive these stories are and mouth-watering sexual delicious they are. As per her style, Rachel picks stories that appeal to everyone and gives us sex in paper form. Rachel adds her story, `Hot For Teacher', and if I DID go back to school, it would be for a student like the one in her story. `Smoke' was also another sinfully sexual short story. `Ride A Cowboy' is the first story in this collection that I read back-to-back. Have mercy on that restaurant booth! I won't name every story because like I said earlier, this was the first erotic book that I read back-to-back! But I'll tease you with one more; `The Hard Way'. Cop and lawyer. Enough said. Rachel and her authors serve up another erotic collection that must be read, practiced, and read again.

Lustful,
By
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
Usually with anthologies it takes me at least a couple stories before I find one that I enjoy. Shockingly with Women in Lust the first story, "Naughty Thoughts" by Portia Da Costa, caught my interests with the first line. "Are you having those naughty thoughts again, you bad girl? I can always tell, because your eyes start to cross." It resonated on a personal level for me because my Husband can always tell when I'm in another mindset. This story goes on twelve pages and quickly became my favorite due to it's realness of a woman hesitantly sharing her fantasies with her lover. It wasn't so over the top that it was fantasy but something that can happen in any bedroom. My enjoyment continued with the second story, "Guess" by Charlotte Stein, a story set with a blindfolded woman being teased, tempted, and left craving as she tries to guess just what is going on around her. Is it a feather? Is it candle wax? Is he going to finish on her? All these sensations without sight. A unique point of view and game so far in most erotica I've read. As with all stories however there were a couple that I just couldn't get into for some reason or another. They just didn't capture my interest, bored me, or just weren't my tastes. I'm just happy to say that I did enjoy a majority of them and wasn't left with a book full of erotica that contained only one story I actually liked.

If the cover doesn't get you the stories surely will. This book is a fantastic read, you'll only put down to change the batteries or clean up the mess! This may just be the perfect book to jump start a stagnate relationship or to be read as a prelude to foreplay and a great night of sex with your partner. It's filled with steamy hot stories from great writers with insatiable appetites for amazing sex. Grab a pack of smokes because after reading this provocative, wildly sexual series of stories, you'll need a cigarette or six!

Excellent bedtime stories,
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
I don't read a lot of erotica, ironically, though I used to when I was a younger woman. Back when I had to sneak it past my mom, as a matter of fact. Now that I'm free to read the sexy and smutty stuff, sometimes it takes me longer to get into it or for the stories to hold my attention. This collection has lots of great, steamy and well-told tales of women in lust, as the title aptly suggests. The editor's "Hot for Teacher" is probably the best-told in the bunch, since the others either take a little too long to get to the point or are hard to follow because the fantasy elements get kind of repetitive. Again, my disclaimer: I don't read a ton of erotica, and I sometimes read anthologies like they're novels -- in chronological order. A reader interested in delving into the stories in nonsequential order might have a more pleasant experience.

Women Freed to Seek Bliss,
By
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
I don't love every single story in this collection, but there are a few VERY good ones. The opener, by Portia Da Costa, gives us Terrence, one of those yummy fictional boyfriends I like to imagine myself with. "Her, Him and Them" by Aimee Pearl is wonderful because it's pure erotica, all want and sensation. "Smoke" by Elizabeth Coldwell is another nice entry - I don't know why Dutch people are so sexy, but they certainly are (even if you're not a big fan of their cigarettes).Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel contributes "Hot for Teacher," in which she deftly appropriates what was once a male fantasy for a self-confident 40-something woman. In fact, many of the stories in this anthology feature women in their forties, women who know exactly what they want and how to get it. I'm in my 30s, and I found this delightful. Self-confidence is incredibly sexy. Another story that subverts the traditionally male fantasy is "Cherry Blossom" by Kayar Silkenvoice, which explores the intercultural (American-Japanese) fantasy and an all-woman version of the happy ending massage. The closer is "Comfort Food" by Donna George Storey, which can only be described as pure and utter deliciousness. It's wonderful to read about women in lust - women who are bold, free, shameless (in a good way), women who know how to reach satisfaction. It's nice to read a book full of heroines unburdened by guilt, with very few obstacles between them and their fondest desires.

Guaranteed to Titillate and Satisfy,
By Clea R. Gellar "Clea R. Gellar "BookWench... (Seattle,Wa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
Women in Lust is a compilation of well-written short stories that are guaranteed to titillate and satisfy all your burning desires. This book has a little bit of something to appease every woman's sexual appetite. As a reader, you will be treated to lots stories of women being challenged to go beyond their sexual boundaries in various ways. There are also tales of women having passionate encounters with men and women they don't know. Each one of these stories is wholly different and enjoyable in its own way. Two of my favorite stories revolved around two married women, both of whom are tempted to cheat on their husbands. They have different reasons for being temped, and they both handle the situations differently. I liked that both of these were included in this compilation, as they appease both sides of the "to cheat or not to cheat" situation. Both stories handle it well. All the tales in this book are well-written and tell a complete story in a few short pages. Each one is full of a wide range of emotions and overflowing with passion. Women in Lust has a little bit of romance, a bit of slap and tickle, and a whole lot of hot steaminess. Grab your partner and read it out loud to spark off a night of pleasure. You're both bound to find something to get your pulses pumping.

A nice collection of women's erotica.,
This review is from: Women in Lust: Erotic Stories (Paperback)
Women in Lust is pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. The stories are well written and the collection well edited, but few of them, I found, were really my cup of tea. Roughly half of the stories star women in discernibly submissive roles. My preference runs toward women being in control...or at least "even" with their partners. If your taste runs otherwise, though, you'll have plenty to read in this collection.Highlights include: "Ode to a Masturbator" by Aimee Herman, "Unbidden" by Brandy Fox, Del Carmen's "Ride a Cowboy," K.D. Grace's "Strapped," Elizabeth Coldwell's "Smoke" and Rachel Kramer Bussel's "Hot for Teacher." My favorite was "Comfort Food" by Donna George Storey, about a cougar, a younger stud chef, and their lustful appreciation of food. A quality collection that is sure to whet the appetites of many readers. |
