Book Description

2007
The story of the vampire is one that has been told and retold throughout the centuries, often undergoing radical changes along the way, until what once was a terrible, bestial creature of darkness has been transformed into a sensual, passionate creature that is often misunderstood by the world at large. Most often the realm of male authors writing about male vampires, over the last century the genre has seen a refreshing swing toward authors of both sexes exploring the other side of the vampiric gender-the women of the night. The sixteen stories collected within these pages are among the very best of their kind, from many of the best fantasy and horror authors writing today. From an encounter with a predatory spouse in a New England storm to a continuation of the Dracula story featuring a completely different tale of love, longing and loss, these stories explore both what it is to be female, human-and vampire, and often all at the same time. The selected stories include: "One for the Road" by Stephen King. The regulars at Tookey's Bar know better than to wander around Jerusalem's Lot-especially at night. But when a husband needs help during a snowstorm, they travel into the heart of the blizzard ... and an encounter with pure evil. "Sister Death" by Jane Yolen. Even the heart of a millennia-old vampire who accompanies theAngel of Death on his appointed rounds can be swayed by the yearning look of a young child. "Queen of the Night" by Gene Wolfe. The lady in white came for the boy in the dead of night, spiriting him away to her dark castle, where he would experience such things that would change his life forever... "Do Not Hasten to Bid Me Adieu" by Norman Partridge. The real story of what happened after the events of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula is told against the vast, wild Texas frontier, as one of Dracula's hunters returns home to claim everything that is his ... including his one true love.

3.0 out of 5 stars A few gems, August 2, 2011
By
hrladyship (Las Cruces, NM United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Women of the Night (Hardcover)
It was exciting to find Women of the Night, featuring tales of female vampires in many guises. Many of the stories are written by women. That raised my expectations. Overall, however, this anthology was disappointing. Some stories were predictable, a few were just dull. Those that stood out as either imaginative or well written, or both, were few, yet memorable.

Friesner's "Claim Jumpin' Woman, You Got a Stake in My Heart" is wonderful. Based on a southern belle and country music, and throwing in a Yankee graduate of Yale, the author took many of the elements and wove them into a fun yarn. "Faith Like Wine" is more serious and beautifully written. This story alone made me a fan of Roxanne Longstreet. Then, Norman Partridge, in the final story, "Do not Hasten to Bid Me Adieu" continues Bram Stoker's Dracula in a logical and satisfying manner. Being the last three stories in the anthology, they made me wish that I had started at the back.

I could give this anthology five stars just based on the three stories, but the lead stories just didn't have the same punch or readability. I might guess that some of them were included because of the authors: Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, etc., but some of them were also written years earlier. Perhaps reading them within the time frame of their creation they would have seemed fresher. There are enough interesting moments in some stories to make them worth reading.

Readers who like this anthology might also like Women of Darkness edited by Kathryn Ptacek. Although out of print, there are copies available in online bookstores.

4.0 out of 5 stars About time women vampires got some notice!, February 28, 2011
This review is from: Women of the Night (Hardcover)
I really enjoy this collection of stories, which cover a wide variety of vampires. Some are kind, even generous. Others are bestial, or murderous monsters. They cover the board so you're certain to find a few good stories that you'll enjoy reading again. It's a shame the book is not bigger and with more stories, hence the subtraction of one star.
