This is a lovely story written in five different women's voices that proves how our identity as mothers can bring us together no matter what our background. Through these five characters, the author was able to explore in depth the feelings and thoughts each brought to a familiar social context- waiting while our children are in an activity. One character wants to remain invisible and feels shameful of her situation. Another has no time for rich white women who have nothing better to do with themselves than have coffee. Another is busy organizing everyone. My favorite character is the one who is facing her mortality and the surprising approach she has as she approaches it. Familiar types in familiar situations that may begin in stereotypes but soon they each develop in surprising ways through their friendship with each other and the ways their differences can help one another. My only complaint was that it was too short.

Such rich insight into societal and race-based norms, into the New Orleans fabric, into the intricacies of marriages & friendships, and into the palpable arenas of terminal illness & spousal abuse, while framing it all within the architectural richness of the city as well as its gloom & social downfalls.

The author gives us not only insight into the women's thinking but admirably gets into the thinking of the child!! With its great splashes of humour ("she covered more ground [...] than a horny widow on a 2nd date"), this is as much a societal reading as a fictional one.

Beautifully written, in a way that savoring every twist of phrase evokes deep understanding & much emotion from the reader!

I truly enjoyed this book. I read it in two days, as it compelled me to finish it, so I could see what happened to all the women. I could vividly picture the coffee shop and all the women due to the author's great development of the characters. Her detail about New Orleans gave me a real feel for the city. It's the perfect book for a cold afternoon curled up on the couch or for taking to the beach.

A wonderful surprise in this yet unknown book. I loved being immersed in the lives of these women, each unique and interesting in their own right. I also loved the character development of one of the young girls in the story and how her vantage point reflected the interactions of the mothers. I would recommend this book to others. Great read.
