2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, bland, and sometimes inaccurate
Given that this book was written by a urologist (Jennifer) and a sex therapist (Laura), I thought it would be highly informative. I've read worse books, but this one was far from the best. My primary complaint is that its scope of coverage was too limited. Secondly, there were some shocking errors in it. Here's one: "Testosterone is also available over the counter in...

I am both a gynecologist and a woman with my share of difficulties in the bedroom. Not only do I think this will change my own life with my husband, but after having read this book, I am seriously considering someday pursuing sub-specializing in the field of female sexual dysfunction. What ground-breaking material these women have written! I've already recommended it to at least ten patients this week alone, and am anxious to see what the ongoing research in this field turns up. This book is sure to be required reading for all gynecologists in training, as up until now it's been one of those complaints you can sympathize with, but not do a whole lot about as a doctor. Bravo to the Bermans and their collegues for pioneering this long overdue research and treatment of the whole woman patient.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book--men too, December 28, 2000
By A Customer
What Our Bodies Ourselves did for women's health, this book does for women's sexual function. This book explains things about the physical and psychological aspects of women's sexuality that most doctors won't or can't tell you. This isn't just about sexual dysfunction, but about sexual function in both the mind and body. The Bermans explain exactly how women's bodies work sexually, why sometimes they don't work as well as they should, and what can be done to fix problems. Their empowering message is that most problems CAN be fixed--you don't have to live with them. I found this book a real eye-opener. I recommend it to anyone in a sexual relationship, male or female, if you're having problems or just want to improve your sex life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Broad Fact-Filled Read!, February 27, 2001
By
"mindhealth" (Mamaroneck, NY) - See all my reviews
As a psychologist, I am grateful to the Bermans for creating a reference that I can easily share with any of my patients regardless of their sex, sexual orientation, age or sexual activity level. In fact, 3 generations of women in my own family have pored over this book! What makes it so special is its unbiased presentation of a large array of medical treatment options beyond those which are traditionally available to my specialty. I expect that this long needed approach will significantly increase the cooperation between physicians and therapists in helping to resolve womens'sexual health problems.

Although the Bermans'studies of female sexuality evidently started with the introduction of Viagra (for men), the thrust of their book goes way beyond Viagra, including many other options, both current and in the research pipelines. Nonetheless, non- medical advice and therapies are addressed comprehensively. I am looking forward to future updates from the Bermans as this exciting field develops.

5.0 out of 5 stars What every woman should know!, December 20, 2000
This book addresses the problem of sexual dysfuntion in women. Few women feel comfortable talking about their sexual function complaints in private, much less with their doctors. This book provides women with information about normal sexual function and responses, what are the causes for sexual dysfunction, and what are the emerging treatments for female sexual dysfunction. The book also provides useful information on how to talk to your doctor about your problem and what questions to ask regarding treatments. A list of resources is provided at the end of the book as well as a questionairre to determine if you have sexual dysfucntion or not. All women and their parthners should read this book. It will be an excellent additon to any library and provides for great dinner converstation and cocktail party discssions. All women need to be informed about their bodies, how they respond, and what the potential problems are.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Women Only is not for Women Only!!, December 31, 2000

This book has something for everyone. No matter how sensitive, its subject matter is presented in a clear, concise and readable manner. My wife and I have already found it catalytic to our relationship. I am sure that both patients and their physicians will have increasingly open and productive communications as a result of this eye-opening approach to women's sexual health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Information for all, December 27, 2000
By

As a Healthcare profesional, I ordered this book to keep on top of trends in the marketplace. When I read it I was impressed by how insiteful and straight forward the authors are in addressing a subject that has been so inadequately discussed to date. The information is presented in a format that will help not only women and their partners, but healthcare providers alike. Thank god there is finally a resource for those in need!

An excellent book. You do not have to have a sexual dysfunction to benefit from this book.

Many women, let alone men, do not understand a woman's sexual anatomy and it's normal sexual function. This information as well as sexual dysfunction is discussed an easy to read, clear, and concise manner. Women and men both can improve their sex lives with the information from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Women Only, January 23, 2001
The book FOR WOMEN ONLY is great! There is thoughtful and caring effort given to let women know they are not alone nor different. These professionals have a bright future. The only thing wrong with the book is its title. This literary work should be required reading for any male wanting to have a meaningful relationship with a woman.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, bland, and sometimes inaccurate, April 5, 2002

Given that this book was written by a urologist (Jennifer) and a sex therapist (Laura), I thought it would be highly informative. I've read worse books, but this one was far from the best. My primary complaint is that its scope of coverage was too limited. Secondly, there were some shocking errors in it. Here's one: "Testosterone is also available over the counter in the form of DHEA ..." WRONG! I'm a doctor and an endocrinologist who feels that any "doctor" making such a statement needs to return to medical school! Here are the facts: (1) DHEA is one of the precursors to testosterone. (2) DHEA may or may not be converted into testosterone in the body. (3) DHEA may also be converted into estrogen, which can oppose the effects of testosterone. Therefore, it is inaccurate (and grossly misleading) to imply that DHEA is a form of testosterone.

I also didn't like the monotonous, too-detached tone of this book. Perhaps that's the way the Bermans attempted to project an air of professionalism, but rather than coming off as professional, the book just seemed to lack vibrance. Therefore, it wasn't enjoyable to read. Its insipid nature would have been tolerable if there weren't those glaring factual errors -- I apologize for harping about them, but such mistakes are (or should be) an embarrassment to the authors.
