This review is from: Women and Politics in Iran: Veiling, Unveiling, and Reveiling (Hardcover)
I had the privilege of taking a class on Women and the Middle East with the author of this book, Professor Sedghi. I learned more in that semester then I've learned in the other 15 years or so of my education, so I cannot help but write a glowing review of her work. Iran has become our enemy, and the U.S. has become determined to demonize the country and inadvertently its people. This work not only gives a unique view into Iran, but women's place in it. Sedghi is meticulous in her work, and has been researching this book for years. She is a pioneer in the this genre. Having the unique experience of being an Iranian women, and a scholar schooled in the west. In our class she constantly discussed access. We always read from women who had lived in the middle east, their unique perspective is especially prominent in Sedghi's work. This book is incredible. It shows the evolution of revolution and backlash against it. It is imperative to understand the people and women of this country to understand their actions on the world stage. This book humanizes a country that is so often demonized. Their actions are all caused by various conditions and historical tensions. Everyone should read this just to better understand a culture and to better understand women.
