A pathbreaking survey of women's experience in the transition societies of the "new" Europe - now updated and expanded to include new chapters on Russia, Croatia, and Serbia.

During the communist period in Eastern Europe, even women with small children typically worked outsie the home, and their participation in formal political institutions was virtually mandatory.

In the 1990's, with the introduction of market reforms, women have been disproportionately affected by employment downsizing and the dramatic erosion of social services. Nor have they fared well in electoral politics; and women have been especially vunerable wherever political competion has given way to violence.

Beyond these generalizations, however, there is in the new political life of women in Eastern Europe a varied richness of experience that is ably reported and analyzed in this revised and expanded collection, which in it's first edition was welcomed as "the vanguard of post-communist women's studies."
