The women are Siramavo Bandaranaike of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka); Indira Gandhi of India; Golda Meir of Israel; Isabel Pern of Argentina; Elizabeth Domitien of the Central African Republic; Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo of Portugal; Margaret Thatcher of the United Kingdom; Vigdis Finnbogadottir of Iceland; Mary Eugenia Charles of Dominica; Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway; Milka Planinc of Yugoslavia; Maria Liberia-Peters of the Netherlands Antilles; Corazon Aquino of the Philippines; Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan; Ertha Pascal Trouillot of Haiti; Kazimiera Prunskiene of Lithuania; Violeta Chamorro of Nicaragua; Mary Robinson of Ireland; Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh; Edith Cresson of France; and Hanna Suchocka of Poland. Some rose to power through the political ranks, several were propelled into office by violence, including assassinations and military uprisings.
