Greek Women Singers of the Smyrnaic School of Rembetika,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Women of Rembetica (Audio CD)
This is a collection of rarely heard--even in Greece-- rembetika music. All the artists are singers, all are women and all--to one or two exceptions--were born in Asia Minor, that is what is now the turkish border of the Egean sea. They sing in the style of Smyrna--the big, greek, turkish, armenian, jewish, metropolis of that area -- before all the Greeks had to flee in 1920. Great names: Maria Papagika, Rosa Askenazy, and more; great songs of the ghazal type--in greek "amané" (from the arab word, "aman"=mercy).
