An excellent source of information,
By A Customer
This review is from: Women at Risk: The HPV Epidemic and Your Cervical Health (Paperback)
I was recently diagnosed with HPV, a disease I had never even heard of before! I had so many questions that my doctors would not answer, and I was so scared... Then I found out about this book and found all the answers to my questions. It explains in a simple fashion what are usually complicated medical issues. I learned not only about HPV, but also what a virus is and how it can be linked with cancer... and how to better take care of myself and loved ones as it informs on how this epidemic affects nol only WOMEN, but MEN and CHILDREN as well. It offers medical and holistic approaches to the diseases and it gives you hope. I wish I had known about HPV before... it certainly is not a very discussed disease in schools nor the media, and this really saddens me now that I know how common it is. I am recommending this book to all the people I care about... and, since life is such a circle, I am recommending it to YOU! Good luck and good healing to you all. And THANK YOU Dr. Henderson... for caring so much!

Clearing up confusion, providing help,
By A Customer
This review is from: Women at Risk: The HPV Epidemic and Your Cervical Health (Paperback)
When I was diagosed with the HPV virus a few weeks ago, I was baffled. What was this strange disease? Then my doctor said there was a possibility that this disease could lead to cervical cancer. I never knew a virus could be connected with cancer, and I got really scared. WOMEN AT RISK cleared up my confusion and also reassured me. Having this virus does NOT mean I'm going to get cancer! Especially if I follow the authors' good, solid advice, which is what I'm doing. From now on, I'm going to get Pap smears regularly! (I had let my checkups lapse, due to my busy schedule.) Also, I'm using the recommendations in the terrific chapter on holistic approaches, like herbs and nutritional supplements. Maybe most importantly, the book helped me look at this illness as a "wake-up call" for me to make lifestyle changes in my diet and stress levels. That's particularly emphasized in the holistic chapter. I wish I lived near New York, so Dr. Warshowsky could be my gynecologist. His ability to combine conventional Western medicine with mind-body and herbal wisdom is great. The world needs more like him. He and Dr. Henderson are true healers.

A real eye-opener,
By A Customer
This review is from: Women at Risk: The HPV Epidemic and Your Cervical Health (Paperback)
Dr. Henderson opened up my eyes to a major health problem in this country today--the HPV virus. I learned what it is, how it can be prevented, and how it can be treated. I was especially appreciative of Dr. Warshowsky's tips about holistic approaches, as I prefer to avoid medications and such whenever possible. I have three daughters in their teens and I have sat them down and talked to them about the virus. I asked them to read this book. The book, by the way, is very easy to read and they should have no problem understanding it. But I never felt "talked down to" by the authors either. I think every woman and teenager should read this!

extremely valuable information, clearly presented,

I just finished writing an email to all the women I know urging them to read this book. Specifically written for the layman rather than the medical professional, this book has a great deal of useful information and advice, and is very easy to read. In addition to discussing traditional medical approaches, there's an entire chapter on holistic treatments. Every woman should read this book!

STILL THE BEST BOOK OUT THERE ON HPV,
By A Customer
This review is from: Women at Risk: The HPV Epidemic and Your Cervical Health (Paperback)
Since the publication of this book, a spate of new books have come out discussing the HPV virus. It's great that this little-known condition has finally received some publicity! However, I would have to say that I still think this is the most reader-friendly and focused book around. I highly recommend it, and I give it to all my clients and patients who come in with the HPV virus. I hope that Henderson, Yasgur and co. publish more books on other medical topics.

I want to tell people that I think this is a great book, but I don't think I can add anything original over what the other reviewers have already said. This is definitely clear and helpful and I've recommended it to a lot of friends. Kudos to all the authors, especially Warshowsky and his holistic chapter.

Finally, a book that answers the questions,
By A Customer
This review is from: Women at Risk: The HPV Epidemic and Your Cervical Health (Paperback)
I just read this book cover to cover in 24 hours. It is very well written, easy to understand for those of us that don't have a medical background, and full of great information on the HPV virus and cervical cancer. I recommend it highly to those that are dealing with the disease now and women of all ages. The book also covers how this disease can effect men and children. Everyone should be aware of this epidemic and what it means to their health. I wish there were more books out there like this. I am sending it to my two daughters that are both college age.

important reading for professionals and laypersons,
By A Customer
This review is from: Women at Risk: The HPV Epidemic and Your Cervical Health (Paperback)
I am a social worker. I work in a major hospital. I also hold a second job, working with teenagers. I try to keep aware of popular-level books on health issues--especially STDs-- because so many of my clients suffer from these conditions. The HPV virus is quite common, but most people don't know much about it. Teens especially need to learn how to protect themselves. This book is great and I feel comfortable recommending it to all my clients, both adults and adolescents. As a man, I'm glad that the book doesn't focus only on how this virus affects women but also looks at the impact on men. This is an important book for everyone to read, especially people in the helping professions--not only doctors and nurses, but also social workers, psychologists, school counselors and coaches.

Learning about my Body,
By A Customer
This review is from: Women at Risk: The HPV Epidemic and Your Cervical Health (Paperback)
I just finished my first year of college. I come from a sheltered background, and this year was the first year that I was surrounded by fellow students who were engaged in sexual activity. It was time to educate myself about STD's. There was lots of informations available about the HIV virus and other STD's, but there was not much information available about the HPV virus, about which I learned from a brochure hanging up on the bulletin board outside the health services on campus. Then I saw this book; it answered all my questions. It also explained what Pap smears are. I never knew what my gynegologist was lookin for when he perfomed this test on me until I read this book. WOMEN AT RISK is very well-written. It manages to communicate very complicated scientific ideas without "dumbing things down". I recommend that the college campus keep a copy of this book on hand for other students to read. It will provide a lot more information than those brochures!

I've seen signs up in my local lab (when I went for blood tests) about the HPV virus. I'm guessing there are a lot of educational intitiatives out there. It's about time! Henderson, Yasgur and Warshowsky were out there educating women a couple of years ago. This is a really readable book and very informative. I hope that when women see the sign hanging in their labs, they'll turn to this book for information.
