Editorial Reviews

Review

Wayne...unusual and truly multidisciplinary collection of articles, held together by the contention that scientific research both contributes to reproducing inequalities based on gender and to documenting and challenging them. ... The intellectual level of the articles is uniformly high, and each article has its own bibliography. No comparable volume exists: it is a welcome addition to the field of feminist science studies..
–Choice, November 2001, M.H. Chaplin

Aimed at an introductory-level audience that is not expected to be familiar with science studies, the anthology can also be a vital tool for even the most seasoned researcher...The interweaving of personal anecdotes with research-oriented studies provides a rich context from which to view the experiences and roles of women in the sciences...for students, educators, researchers, and popular audiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A zippy and insightful introduction to issues of women in science, December 14, 2009
A book about women in science that describes how vibrators were marketed in the 1920s? Why not? This "reader" includes short original documents, with discussion about how they fit into a wider view of women's studies. One of my favorites (and original to the book) is the odd coincidence of ads in publications like "Science" and "Nature" have the text "easy" and "cheap" if they show a woman in the ad photo.

The texts in this book served as the basis for a lively reading group at my university and I highly recommend it. Really, we laughed, we argued and we left different people.
