Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-An unbiased look at women astronauts. Briggs's writing style is clear, without oversimplification. She includes the two Russian cosmonauts who were the first to break the gender barrier along with several of their American counterparts. Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Shannon Lucid, and Eileen Collins are among the individuals profiled. Offset sections detail the requirements to become a pilot and where to write for more information on the Space Camp in Huntsville, AL. Basic material is covered well; the only complaint is the short shrift given Judith Resnik, who is merely mentioned in the "In Memoriam" section. The explanations of various NASA terms in the text and glossary, as well as a list for further reading, provide stepping stones to more in-depth material. Black-and-white, archival shots and full-color photos of the various astronauts in training give a glimpse of the commitment needed to succeed in the space program.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, general look at women in space, May 8, 2000
This book clearly seems directed at the young adult market (library binding, lots of color photos, etc.), but there is good information to be gleaned on women in space no matter what your age. I can think of no other book that collects brief bios of women--and not just Americans--who've either made it to space or been instrumental in getting other women there. If you're a fan of the space program, this is a nice little book to add to your collection.
