This is a compilation of celebratory music. It's what we are here for, to celebrate, rejoice, say thank you. This music from all corners of the world will unite sisters, neighbours, co-workers, daughters-in-law, those who will never meet. It cuts national barriers, sexual barriers, most importantly political barriers. We are here for this, to target peoples' ears and hearts nothing else. Women of spirit we call on you to sing your heart out. No-one ever bought a CD of the sound of bombs. We would have missed the point. Sing with your voices, move your fingers on your guitars, buy this CD and clap.

While the Putumayo collections vary from the sublime to the "Huh?", this one is a winner. I was already familiar with the pop and Celtic artists, but most of the other tracks were a revelation: wonderful music is being produced in odd little corners of the world (such as the Canary Islands), and some ancient musical traditions (such as blacks in Peru) are virtually unknown outside their native turf. I'd never have known this music existed if it weren't for this CD, and I applaud Putumayo for having assembled such an amazing collection. (But I have to agree that the Ani DiFranco song was a poor choice. She's a fine musician and a good songwriter, but in between Ima Galguen's and Savina Yannatou's ethereal selections, hers stands out like a Mohawk hairdo at King Arthur's Court.)

This CD was given to me as a gift, and I must admit, I was a little skeptical. Much to my surpirse and delight, it's a fabulous CD with a mix of world influences. I'm in the process of tracking down entire albums from some of the artists on Women of Spirit.

My sister and I list this as one of our favorite albums.Each track is unique and uplifting except Ani DiFranco, her cut just does not work here. Each song inspires images of faraway places. Its fun and full of imagination.

Deciding my favorite tracks on this CD was harder than for many others. In most compilations one or two tracks stand out. In this, different tracks grew on me at different rates. The collection as a whole settled slowly; how well it went together was only appreciated after several listenings.

One of the very, very best. You'll find yourself reaching for this one again and again. Beautiful, complex, fulfilling... you'll hear new things every time you play this CD. Highly recommended and worth every penny.

I had purchased this CD several years ago and totally wore it out. I was missing the music and went looking for another. Unfortunately, it is not being released anymore. I was able to buy a new copy from a dealer on Amazon. I am once again a very happy listener. I had great service and I will try this again.

Although this cd stands well on its own as a collection, I think that all the artists who've contributed to this cd are wonderful. However, its best use is as a jumping-off point to find these incredible voices. I've since added several more cds to my collection because of it... I'll be adding more of these women to my collection as $ permits. I used to be so eager to play this cd, I'd pop it into my laptop, kept in my backpack, and listen to it (dancing only a little, so as to avoid being dragged away by men in white coats) on the subway. My interest in it has since mellowed, but it's still a great album, gaining a lot of time in the player. I have to admit, Ani DiFranco's song "Done Wrong" doesn't "fit" with the rest...but I think it still belongs here, among these other great works.

I love this CD except for ONE song. How often does THAT happen? Not very. Beautiful compilation.
