Editorial Reviews

Goddess Remembered - Part One - is a salute to 35,000 years of pre history, to the values of ancestors only recently remembered and to the goddess-worshipping religious of the ancient past. The Burning Times - Part Two - is a beautifully crafted film and an in-depth look at the witch hunts that swept through Europe just a few hundred years ago. False accusations and trials led to massive torture and burnings at the stake, and ultimately to the destruction of an organic way of life. This film advances the theory that widespread violence against women and the neglect of our environment today can be traced back to those times. Full Circle - Part Three - is a stirring documentary in which authors, teachers, social activists and feminist explore manifestation of contemporary women's spirituality in the Western world. Drawing on the customs, rites and knowledge of the past, Full Circle envisions a sustainable future where domination is replaced with respect. At the center of these discussions is a reverence for the Earth - a sacred circle which we must protect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly and beautifully told July 31, 2008
Women & Spirituality Everyone with a longing to learn and reclaim the wisdom of our mother ancestors will find these multi-faceted films deeply informing. The content and the way the material is presented is consistent with an aesthetic you don't even know you missed until you experience it. I have these films on VHS, and gratefully shared them with friends and watched them with my sons many times over the I'm replacing them with DVDs. You can be certain that I will continue to replace them with whatever format allows their continued telling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excited to be able to get it! March 1, 2010

This was an excellent series on PBS, and I'd ordered on VHS yrs ago but no copies were available. Very interesting exploration of views and roles of women from early nature-based civilization through advent of Christianity, and to present, and how the societal structure diminished womens' role and value. Not militant feminism, just tracking of facts and evolution that is thought-provoking, and relevant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful set October 1, 2009

I have a VHS version of this set but, I was so happy to find it in DVD. Beautifully reproduced, informative, enchanting music. I highly reccommend this set to anyone who would like to know what life was like during the age of the Celts when all the world's people worshipped nature, before the age of disrespecting our planet and most of the life forms on it. The set reminds me that we humans were once responsible and kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding film; stands the test of time August 31, 2009

I first viewed this film (3 parts) on PBS around 1994; it changed my life, hence, never forgot it. Its parts are: Goddess Remembered; The Burning Times; Full Circle. It started me on my Pagan, Druid, Druidcraft path. I wanted a DVD-version at home so went tooling around Amazon to see if it was in DVD format and sur' 'nuff, there it was (2007). Created in 1989 in VHS, this film is still as relevant today as it was then. I first heard Loreena McKennitt's music here [...]I wish Reclaiming was everywhere. The dancer backgrounded by desert is phenomenal footage that still haunts me, a good haunt. This film was, and is, a watershed film. I can think of no other like it. The women who put together this film were founding mothers and pathfinders of the Goddess tradition, helping pave the way for Witchcraft, Paganism, Druidry, Faery, and other earth-folk-mother-nature spiritualities we see today. The women showcased were generally from the San Francisco Bay Area: Starhawk, Jean Bolen, Charlene Stretnak, Susan Griffin, Carol Christ, Luisah Teish, Kim Chernin, Merlin Stone; two have passed on: Mary Tallmountain (1918-1994) and Shekinah Mountainwater (1939-2007). This film used to cost $100. Now it is $30-odd new or even less. Well worth it in 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, peaceful, beautiful and important July 11, 2010
For those who understand and appreciate the power of the sacred feminine, and more importantly, for those who assume that men have always had the upper hand in spiritual matters, "Women and Spirituality" is a very rare and welcomed and beautiful film. The patriarchy inherent in the dominant religions of our day has done its best to ignore and deny the history of women and spirituality, the power of women and the sacredness of the feminine. The result is a tragic imbalance of power. Consider the leaders of today's churches and today's governments, overwhelmningly men, and consider, for example, the multi-billion dollar per year pornography industry which perpetuates the myth of male dominance/female subservience. Is there any coincidence?

In this film we hear stimulating conversation between Starhawk (Truth or Dare: Encounters with Power, Authority, and MysteryThe Fifth Sacred Thing), Merlin Stone (When God Was a Woman) Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen (Goddesses in Everywoman: Powerful Archetypes in Women's Lives) and others, we see beautiful scenery which respectfully unites earthly women and Mother Earth, and we experience the proper perspective of women in the history of human spirituality, some of which is truly terrifying (The Burning Times). I cannot recommend this film enough. It should be in every library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great selection July 29, 2009
I love this trilogy and wish they would re-make it in this decade. It's a great learning tool and great documentary.

I remember they aired it twice once in October of 2004 and then October of about 2006 on PBS. I tried taping it and it didn't pan out. After trying to find a good priced dvd set, I finally found one. Grab it up before it's out of print!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive piece of work January 1, 2011
Verified Purchase
I received the 3 VHS tapes of this work when I was doing talent for a PBS station in Denver. It was impossible to get otherwise. I hosted the airing of this series many times, and at the time was very active in the women's spirituality community. My copies were completely worn out and I waited for years for this to come out on DVD.

This series is as perfect as you can get. Donna Reed assembled a great wealth of wisdom in the women that appear on this film. She introduced Loreena McKennitt to a wide audience. She started a conversation.

The splitting up of the series into long past, past, and present were appropriate. The first DVD, Goddess Remembered, speaks to pre-history and early history of the Feminine Divine, and how she was subsumed by 'sky' religions i.e. patriarchy. The next DVD, The Burning Times, is a difficult watch, as expected. The systematic torture of women, also called the Women's Holocaust, however, is an important piece of 'herstory.' Finally, Full Circle brings us home to today - how the Feminine Divine has been recovered and re-expressed today.

It is hard to be 'fair and balanced' when you are rectifying hundreds, if not thousands, of years of misinformation. "History is written by the winners" and re-writing is is done by the courageous. There may be some poetic license with some of the hard anthropological facts, however, don't let that deter you from seeing the broader scope of this work which resonates as true.

All our daughters need to see this. So do our sons.
