Disappointing and very average imagery,
This review is from: Women (Hardcover)
Alas the best shot is on the cover and in my humble opinion its very average after that. Nothing new is offered in this book. Sure the subject matter is as old as time but there is not anything that makes the work stand out. (Composition, lighting, etc.).
I wish Amazon offered at least 12 preview shots for books like this, would give customers a better shopping experience. I looked through the book once and then threw it away. If you collect photography books there is no reason to keep something so average. If you were interested in something that DOES deliver I recommend anything by: Bruno Bisang. You will not be disappointed as he does offer something unique and something that will inspire you rather than not.

Great cover, poor book.,

Stafan May IS a great photographer. This though is NOT a great book. I think another reviewer already said it, the best photo (by far) is the cover, and it's all downhill from there. Just take a look at the "additional images" shown here on Amazon. The remainder of the book is rarely even in the same direction as the cover. Really, it's a shame, because that cover is really a killer photo. But personally, I *hate* it when publishers do this! Great cover that bears little or no resemblance to the contents of the book. It's so deceptive and misleading, like wrapping a $100 bill around a bunch of $1's.
Mr. May can do better. Take a look at some of his other books. I'd really like to give this one 2 stars, but that cover shot alone is worth the purchase price of this book, so I give it 3 stars total. Buy it for the cover and consider the rest of the book as "filler". DBAX

Exceptionally Emotional,
This review is from: Women (Hardcover)
I discovered Stefan Mays Photos in the Australian "Black and White" Magazine and was so impressed that I bought his book "Women". It turned out that my first impression was right and that my expectations were not only met but even excelled. For me as a collector of good black and white photography Stefan May is so far the only artist I know who is able to show naked women in a very emotional way without implicating the lightest touch of pornography. You could get the feeling the women are alive. The photographs are talking to their observer as I never saw it before. All in all I can only highly recommend this stunning masterpiece!

I have a small collection of nude photography books; Stefan May is among my favorite photographers. I love the sensual beauty of the human body, both the male and female forms are evocative in their own way, something that Stephan May captures beautifully.
His 1996 collection titled Beauty is actually what drew me to this book. But Minded (1997), Sola (1997) and Women Only-II (1996) have quickly become some of my other favorites. This book offers a small representation of his collections, of which I have only mentioned four. This is a great book for any black and white photography collection. I have enjoyed the sensual and artistic representation of each of the photographs in 'Women' and am glad to have this book as part of my collection.

I collect nude photography books, I have many. I must tell you, this particular book is not a masterpiece. Nevertheless, the book is above average, and some of the shots are amazing.
It does lack a real artistic subtext on the shoots, but they are beautiful, and unlike most books, there is quite a mixture of races (most books I've seen around tend to have almost exclusively Caucasian models). Also, a few shots are two-pagers, what tends to be a downer for me.

Elegance In Natural Beauty,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Women (Hardcover)
These pictures capture some of the grace and elegance that a woman can possess without a heavy lude or crude weight attached to them. Beauty can be so subjective. What one sees and appreciates may not be shared by some one else. When broken down, there is a playful quallity to these shots. They are soft and seductive and yet they never lose the charactor of the subject. Any picture that can move you past the surface of what you are seeing and bring you into the moment shared with the one that you are viewing, takes talent and can be concidered Art.

Woman are objects, face it,
By Phonie Clark (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Women (Hardcover)
Does photography capture the essence of soul? Or does it deceive our perception? Or both? This book's contemptuous discernment of preposterous visual dexterity lends nothing to the exploration of feminine essence. Rather, it confounds ocular satisfaction by projecting a shallow prognosis of intergender relations, which we are offered as a proxy for reality.
