Book Description

Live Girls April 26, 2004
Women from all walks of life—peasants, queens, princesses, wives, mothers, and sisters—have fought for freedom and honor throughout history. These brave (and sometimes bloodthirsty) women have been too often lost in the male-dominated annals of military history. In this fun, informative, and beautifully designed volume, the true stories of women from around the globe come to life, including the Amazons; Lozen, Apache warrior; Tomoe Gozen of Japan; Queen Boudicca of the Celts; Lakshmibai of India, and the Trung sisters of Vietnam. But women warriors aren’t just ancient mythology; also featured are the modern women who grace the playing fields, small and big screen, comic books, and the political arena—from Joan of Arc to Mother Teresa and Madeline Albright to the Powerpuff Girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Women's history 101--Amazons and then some, October 30, 2004

Don't get me wrong. I'm not afraid to use the "F" word when describing myself. Yes, feminist. But the goddess knows how boring it is when you get stuck listening to women of a certain type drone on about what victims women have been throughout history. Sure, women have plenty to be sore about, puh-len-ty, but celebrating our strong sisters seems oh so much more productive than rehashing a centuries-old laundry list of transgressions. Which is the thing I like so much about this book.

In a time when we have so few heroes or heroines (who aren't wearing NBA numbers or midriffs and belly rings) Women Warriors tells the stories of plenty of gals you wouldn't mind taking a little inspiration from, let alone meeting over a cold one at the bar down the street. The book features true ass-kicking warriors (Joan of Arc being the most famous, plus plenty of sword-wielders you've probably never heard of like Tomoe Gozen), but also intellectual and philosophical warriors like Eleanor Roosevelt and Indira Ghandi. All this without ever taking itself too seriously. Which is a credit to the author, who could convince even the most stalwart of feminist academicians that the Power Puff Girls and Buffy deserve a place in history next to the Amazons.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth About Women, June 8, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Women Warriors: Adventures from History's Greatest Female Fighters (Live Girls Series) (Paperback)
Listen, I've always known that women kick tail, and this book proves it. Forget about Xena and Wonderwoman, let's get to the real action with Lozen and the Truong Sisters. Let's find out about a day in the life of Lakshmibai and Boudicca and recognize that feminism isn't a NEW phenomenon, it's part of the world order. (It's just that some people decided to leave these fierce women out of the text books because frankly, they put the men to shame.) Apeles does a great job of including vital historical data and mixing it with modern text, a technique which makes the book appealing as a conversation piece. There's no heavy handed "women are better than men" thing in this book, just straight facts about a legion of warriors who deserve to be known. Excellent!

History books can usually be pretty boring. This one is not ! It is fun, alive, easy to read and very colorful. The information is accessible to young readers and adult readers like me...who don't want to be overwhelmed with information, but want to have fun learning it ! This is an original and lively book, I would recommend it.
