Take the Ride
I just happened to run into this book of poetry from William Joyce and read aloud many of his poems. I think him to be absolutely brilliant. Should poetry be used for any experience?
I found some of the earlier poems off-putting but am glad I read through them all. Reading the whole book offers a better perspective on Mr. Joyce's work. Using poetry to visit any experience is not, however, the way I'd choose to go. He did. He does. And the results are certainly mixed.

He weaves the reader into paradox, surprise and poignancy with ease and grace. With some of his poems I chuckled; with some I wondered; with others, like "We Laughed Because We Knew, Pittsburgh, 1959" his words grabbed at my heart: "where fathers gave their blood in drops for a pension at the end of their bones" WOW! How well put.My grandfather was one of those men. For anyone from PGH or who wants to remember a time long since past this collection of poems is superb....especially the one entitled: The Cat, The Rat, The Wife and ME...a must read!
