WOMEN OF WISDOM

The Journey of the Sacred Feminine through the Ages

[Watkins Publishing . 307 pages-soft back].

by Paula Marvelly.

Paula Marvelly is a distinguuished Authoress. Her recent
"Teachers of the One" is still a
best selling introduction to the world's leading teachers of Advaita
since it was first
published by Watkins in 2002..

Marvelly is gifted with a talented readable prose-style which
warmly conveys the
character, as well as the message of the best modern Advaita teachers,
and her book has been
both influential and widely read. It is undoubtedly one of the best
introductions to this
widespread and fast growing Teaching now sweeping across Europe and
America. like wild fire.

In her new book she now gives us a a series of spirited and
lively written chapters, where
she pursues with great honesty, scholarship and integrity, a personal
enquiry into the Lives and
Teachings of many of the most significant Wise Women. of the World

She illustrates this Sacred Feminine Principle in action, by
relating the true stories
of those who have commanded the greatest respect from their
contemporaries and whose influences
still survive, and in many instances have become legendary.

The book spans from From Enheduenna, the High Priestess of
Ur, to the famed modern
Western Mystic, Irina Tweedie, whose spiritual Odyssey from Aryanagar
to the Himalayas, led to her
eventual domicile in London ,where for many years she taught a
devoted following. Marvelly
vividly and movingly describes her arduous training by the revered
Sufi master Bai Sahib.

Around the figure of Hatcheput , daughter of King Tuthmosis
the First,she unveils the
secrets and powers of the Mother Goddesss in Ancient Egypt. From the
Indus Valley she tells us
about Vach, the living Goddesss of Learning, daughter of the Sage
Ambrina, and then moves onto
Makeda, the famed Queen of Sheba, and her relationship with King
Solomon.

The legendary and mysterious Poetess Sappho is included,
followed by a study of the
Buddhist Therigatha Nuns. She also gives us the intimate story of the
enigmatic Mary Magdalene
and her relatioship with Jusus Christ.

Chinese Nuns, Rabia al-Adawaiyya, Yeshe Tsogyal, Andal,
Hildegard of Bingen, Sun-Buer, The
Beguines, Julian of Norwich, Mirabai, Teresa of Avila, Grace Aguilar,
Emily Dickenson, Sharada
Devi, and Mirra Alfassa, are all scrutably examined, Their lives,
teachings, poetry wisdom, and
sayings are extensively quoted and revealed

What this fine book achieves is the historical proof of the
perrenial power and influence
of the `Sacred Feminine Principle' in the life of many differing
cultures and civilisations .
All the Higher Religions are included and the stories are told in an
emminently readable way, with
ample historic exzplanation and poetic illustrations. The finely
produced book includes an
extensive bibliography, reference, notes and index.

The book is emotionally moving , and will strike a strong chord in
the hearts of all those
who see that the Sacred Feminine Principle not only has a magnificent
tradition , but must live
on in this modern world where the role of the feminine has undergone
such a radical change.

For those that enjoy reading professional writers with a gifted
literary style, a respect
for facts, rather than speculation and with a warm empathy with their
subject , I heartlly
recomnend this fine book, which I predict will turn out to be a
landmark in the full recognition
of the Sacred Feminine Principle , much needed in our contemporary
world .
